* 1911 – Roald Amundsen's team, comprising himself, Olav Bjaaland, Helmer Hanssen, Sverre Hassel, and Oscar Wisting, becomes the first to reach the South Pole.

A second attempt with a team, consisting of Olav Bjaaland, Helmer Hanssen, Sverre Hassel, Oscar Wisting, and Amundsen himself, departed on 19 October 1911.

The first known sighting of Ellef Ringnes Island was in 1901 by a sledging party consisting of Gunerius Isachsen and Sverre Hassel.

On 14 December 1911 along with Amundsen, Helmer Hanssen, Olav Bjaaland and Sverre Hassel, Wisting planted the Norwegian flag on the Geographic South Pole, the first explorers to have reached that point.

Sverre Helge Hassel

Sverre Helge Hassel ( 30 July 1876 – 6 June 1928 ) was a Norwegian polar explorer and one of the first five people to reach the South Pole.

Sverre Hassel was born in Christiania, and as soon as he was old enough, he went to sea, earning his mate's certificate.

Sverre Hassel died in 1928 while visiting his old friend Amundsen.

With his first wife, the Danish noble Benedicta Ebbesdatter ( Galen, apparently not Hvide as otherwise alleged, b. c. 1165 / 70, d. 1200 ), whom he married before 1190 when yet living in Denmark, Sverker had at least one well-attested daughter, Helena Sverkersdotter, as well as possibly further children, such as Karl ( who died in adolescence at the latest, if ever lived ; but his existence is from the record that he is alleged to have married a daughter of king Sverre of Norway ), and possibly even two other daughters ( if they existed, their names are given by reconstructive history research as Margaret and Kristina – however they may just have been Sverker's first wife's kinswomen ).

King Håkon III Sverresson ( 1202 ), son and successor of Sverre, hastened to make peace with the Church, whose liberty had been preserved by the unflinching attitude of the pope and his archbishops.

The sagas of king Inge do not mention any offspring, but one of the pretenders against king Sverre, Jon Kuvlung ( died 1188 ), claimed to be Inge ’ s son.

The first director was Einar Bøe ( 1947 – 1964 ), followed by Erik Willoch ( 1964 – 1989 ), Ove Liavaag ( 1989 – 2000 ), Randi Flesland ( 2000 – 2005 ), Sverre Quale ( 2006 – 2010 ) and Dag Falk-Petersen ( 2011 -).

However, this law never came into force, as King Magnus was defeated and killed by Sverre Sigurdsson, who became King Sverre.

Ivar Gjesling, allied himself with the Birchlegs ( Birkebeinerne ) — who chose Sverre as their king at Øreting in 1177.

In 1206 a group of Birkebeiner party soldiers, who fought for Sverre Sigurdsson and his descendants in the Norwegian civil war, smuggled the illegitimate son of Norway's King Håkon Sverresson from Lillehammer to safety in Trondheim.

Such a man was then needed to defend the liberty of the Catholic Church against the encroachments of King Sverre, who wished to make the Church a mere tool of the temporal power.

Sverre sought assistance from the Swedish earl Birger Brosa who sent him Swedish forces after some hesitation.

The pawnbrokers then travelled to Norway and delivered it to Sverre who used it for everything it was worth.

In Trøndelag, most of the population was still loyal to Sverre, and many of those who had joined the Baglers now changed sides again.

He was an early supporter of king Sverre, who brought the birkebeiner faction to power in the late 12th century after years of war against king Magnus Erlingsson.

He was succeeded as king by the 13-year-old Haakon Haakonsson, an illegitimate grandson of king Sverre, who had been raised at the courts of king Inge and earl Haakon since they became aware of his existence in 1206.

Magnus ' reign saw the arrival in Norway of Sverre Sigurdsson, who claimed the throne for himself.

Following his death during 1202, King Sverre was succeeded by his younger son who reigned as King Haakon III of Norway until his death on 2 January 1204.

Gjesling allied himself with the Birkebeiner — who chose Sverre as their king at Øreting in Nidaros in 1177.

In 1177, Sverre Sigurdsson, who was king of Norway from 1184-1202, led the rebel Birkebeiners to Trøndelag where in June, Sverre was hailed as king at Øretinget, the Thing ( assembly ) for Trøndelag.

It is probably not a historic account of real events since it was remarked by king Sverre of Norway, who heard it, that it was an amusing lying tale.

Among them were the Birkebeiner chieftains Eystein Meyla and Sverre Sigurdsson who were kinsmen of Brigida Haraldsdotter.

Beginning with the ascent to the throne of King Sverre in 1184, he and his descendants ousted their enemies who belonged to groups like the Baglers ( 1196 – 1217 ) and the Ribbungs ( 1219 – 1227 ), thus eliminating and replacing considerable parts of the ancient aristocracy.

Sverre had in fact before battles proclaimed to his soldiers that he who killed a lendman, should himself become a lendman.

Sigurd Magnusson ( 1180 – 3 April 1194 ) was a Norwegian nobleman who campaigned against King Sverre of Norway during the Civil war era in Norway.
