In 1582, Nobunaga's former sandal bearer Hashiba Hideyoshi invaded Bichu Province, laying siege to Takamatsu Castle.

Led by Mōri Terumoto, reinforcements arrived outside Takamatsu Castle, and the two sides came to a standstill.

Most believe that Hideyoshi, envied and hated by fellow generals for his swift rise from a lowly footman to a top general under Oda Nobunaga, wanted to give the credit for taking Takamatsu to Nobunaga so as to humble himself in front of other Oda vassals.

Hatsumi's claimed connection to Ninjutsu is through his teacher Takamatsu Toshitsugu.

Other researchers believe that there is no historical basis for the claims that Takamatsu had any link to a ninjitsu lineage.

The head of the Bujinkan organisation, Hatsumi, claims to be the lineage holder of several ryūha taught in the Bujinkan, which he claims were transferred to him in 1958 by his teacher Takamatsu.

From 1968 and onwards, the Bugei Ryuha Daijiten has entries bearing the name of Hatsumi below his teacher Takamatsu for the following school entries: Gyokko-ryū Kosshi jutsu, Kukishinden Ryu, Kotō-ryū Koppōjutsu, Shinden Fudō-ryū Dakentai jutsu, Takagi Yōshin-ryū Jūtai jutsu, Gikan-ryū Koppō jutsu, Gyokushin-ryū Ninpō and Kumogakure-ryū Ninpō.

On 26 December 1911 his granddaughter Tokugawa Kikuko, later Princess Takamatsu was born, who married Prince Takamatsu, the brother of Emperor Shōwa.

Hatsumi was accepted as Takamatsu's student and spent fifteen years on Honshu Island learning various ninjutsu styles from Takamatsu and other members of the Takamatsu family, along with continuing to learn judo, karate, aikido, and kobudo.

Takamatsu died in Nara, Japan in 1972 after advancing Hatsumi from student and bestowing on him " all the art of the nine schools ", three of which he indicated were ancient ninja schools and six samurai schools of martial arts.

Prince Higashikuni remained steadfast in his opposition to the war with the Allied powers, and was part of the conspiracy ( with Prince Asaka, Prince Takamatsu, and former Prime Minister Konoe ) which finally ousted Tōjō in July 1944 following the fall of Saipan to American forces.
