His later author discoveries included Tanith Lee, Jennifer Roberson, Michael Shea, Ian Wallace, Tad Williams, Celia S. Friedman, and C. J. Cherryh, whose Downbelow Station ( 1982 ) was the first DAW book to win the Hugo Award for best novel.

The revived magazine saw initial success, publishing notable contemporary writers such as Tanith Lee, Brian Lumley and Thomas Ligotti alongside artists including George Barr, Jason Van Hollander, and Allen Koszowski.

He created book cover illustrations for the novels of Iain Banks, John Wyndham, Mercedes Lackey, Brian Aldiss, Tanith Lee and Greg Bear.

Tanith Lee married author John Kaiine in 1992.

She has received some small press treatment, such as the Arkham House edition of short stories Dreams of Dark and Light: The Great Short Fiction of Tanith Lee in 1986, and in the first " Night Visions " instalment published by Dark Harvest.
