) Though the team failed to save the title, which ended its initial run with # 66 ( March 1970 ), the collaboration here and on the " Kree-Skrull War " arc of The Avengers # 93-97 ( Nov. 1971-May 1972 ) produced what comics historians regard as some of Marvel's creative highlights of the era.

The first character debuted during the Golden Age in USA Comics # 1 ( Aug. 1941 ), and was reintroduced in Giant-Size Avengers # 1 ( Aug. 1974 ).

A second villainous version debuts during the Silver Age in The Avengers # 69 ( Oct. 1969 ), with a third heroic version debuting in The Avengers # 85 ( Feb. 1971 ).

The second, villainous version appears in the final panel of The Avengers # 69 ( Oct. 1969 ), the first chapter of a three-issue storyline by writer Roy Thomas and penciller Sal Buscema.

Roy Thomas and penciller John Buscema created an alternate-universe team of heroes called the Squadron Supreme, who debut in Avengers # 85 ( Feb. 1971 ).

The characters including the Whizzer, whose name is Stanley Stewart, were identical in name and appearance to the Squadron Sinister, which caused confusion in Marvel's production department, as the covers of The Avengers # 85 and # 141 ( Nov. 1975 ) " cover-blurbed " appearances by the Squadron Sinister, when in fact it was the Squadron Supreme that appeared in both issues.

The Squadron Supreme first appeared in Avengers # 85 – 86 ( February – March 1971 ) and were created by Roy Thomas and John Buscema.

Although this was a deliberate choice by writer Roy Thomas, it created confusion in Marvel's production department, as the covers of Avengers # 85 and # 141 ( Nov. 1975 ) claimed the issues featured appearances by the Squadron Sinister, when in fact it was the Squadron Supreme that appeared in both issues.

ITV produced a sequel series The New Avengers ( 1976 – 1977 ) with Patrick Macnee returning as John Steed, and two new partners.

Some early episodes are also believed to be damaged or in poor quality, whereas much of the output of other broadcasters – such as many early episodes of The Avengers ( shot in the electronic studio rather than on film ) produced by Associated British Corporation – have been destroyed.

As part of the Dark Reign storyline Noh-Varr joined the new team the Dark Avengers using the alias Captain Marvel.

The Ultimate Marvel version of Red Skull appears in Ultimate Comics: Avengers created by Mark Millar.

The segment's title likely derives from the DC Comics superhero organization The Justice League and its sanitized animated cartoon version, Super Friends, though the team itself was clearly a parody of Marvel's Avengers as the three main characters were loosely based on Marvel Comics characters.

Marvel has also had many large crossover events which depicted an alternative universe, many springing from events in the X-Men books, such as Days of Future Past, the seminal Age Of Apocalypse, and 2006's House Of M. In addition the Squadron Supreme is a DC inspired Marvel Universe that has been used several times, often crossing over into the mainstream Universe in the Avengers comic.
