Colonel William Light ( 27 April 1786 – 6 October 1839 ) was a British military officer and the first Surveyor-General of the Colony of South Australia.

When Colonel Light was designing Adelaide, his plans included surrounding the city with of parklands.

It is sometimes claimed that Colonel Light also designed the city of Christchurch in New Zealand.

Colonel William Light is commemorated in a number of ways, including:

* The naming of the Adelaide suburb of Colonel Light Gardens.

The recipe is said to have been invented by a bartender at that club, and popularized by a club member and bourbon distiller, Colonel James E. Pepper, who brought it to the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel bar in New York City.

This building being later found unsuitable, Colonel Perkins consented to its sale, and in 1839 the institution was moved to the former Mount Washington House Hotel in South Boston.

In 1887 one Mr. E. C. Webster began construction of a hotel on the southeast corner of Raymond Avenue and Kansas Street ( 1929 Green St .) When he was unable to complete the job, a newcomer to the area, Colonel G. G. Green, took over the construction and finished the Green Hotel, which opened in 1888.

Cynthiana was named after Cynthia and Anna Harrison, daughters of Robert Harrison, who had donated land known as the Public Square, though Harrison County was named after Colonel Benjamin Harrison ( not the U. S. President ) who was an early settler to the area and the sheriff of Bourbon County, Kentucky.

The New York franchise was granted to Colonel J. S. Hammond and T. J. Duggan, although the ownership was held secretly by " Big Bill " Dwyer, an infamous bootlegger from New York City, to play in New York's Madison Square Garden.

He also designed the first monument to Colonel Light in Light Square ( 1843 ).

When Adelaide was surveyed, by Colonel William Light over a decade before, land in Victoria Square had been set aside for public use.

Military Advisory Group headquarters in an armored limousine, Colonel Rowe's vehicle was hit by gunfire from a. 45 caliber pistol and an M16 rifle near the corner of Tomas Morato Street and Timog Avenue in Quezon City.
