Mary McLeod Bethune founded the Daytona Educational and Industrial Training School in 1904.

Embry-Riddle's Daytona Beach campus has one of the most extensive Reserve Officers ' Training Corps ( ROTC ) programs in the United States and the nation's largest Air Force ROTC program.

In 2002, teenager Monica Pippin brought a federal lawsuit against Playboy Entertainment, Anheuser-Busch, Deslin Hotels, Best Buy, and other companies relating to her appearance the previous year in a Daytona Beach wet t-shirt contest, at which time she had been 16 junior at Florida's Plant City High School.

There is also the National High School Drill Team Championships held in Daytona Beach, Florida for high school students where schools from across the US descend on Daytona Beach and the Ocean Center for a wonderful weekend of competition and camaraderie.

She graduated from Seabreeze High School in Daytona Beach, Florida.

The program is the third largest in the nation behind Spartan School in Tulsa, Oklahoma and the Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach.

In the 2007 season, the Men's and Ladies ' Varsity teams went to the National High School Drill Team Championships in Daytona Beach, Florida for the first time.

In the 1920s and 1930s, Daytona Beach became known as the place to set world land speed records, supplanting France and Belgium as the preferred location for land speed records, with eight consecutive world records set between 1927 and 1935.

After a historic race between Ransom Olds and Alexander Winton in 1903, the beach became a mecca for racing enthusiasts and 15 records were set on what became the Daytona Beach road course between 1905 and 1935.

By the time the Bonneville Salt Flats became the premier location for pursuit of land speed records, in 1936, Daytona beach had become synonymous with fast cars .< ref >

Shortly after its advent, Americans Jim Wynne, Dick Bertram and Don Aronow led the battle for technological supremacy, with Daytona, Mercruiser, and AeroMarine power plants reigning supreme.

In 2010 a group of parasail operators including ( North Shore Parasail-Kevin Kramer and Daytona Beach Parasail-Matthew Dvorak ) joined the Water Safety Industry Association in an effort to establish best practices and safe operating practices for the parasail industry.

" The King ", as he is nicknamed, is most well known for winning the NASCAR Championship seven times ( Dale Earnhardt is the only other driver to accomplish this feat ), winning a record 200 races during his career, winning the Daytona 500 a record seven times, and winning a record 27 races ( ten of them consecutively ) in the 1967 season alone.

The annual national championship for Club Racing is called the SCCA National Championship Runoffs and has been held at Riverside International Raceway ( 1964, 1966, 1968 ), Daytona International Speedway ( 1965, 1967, 1969 ), Road Atlanta ( 1970 – 1993 ), Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course ( 1994 – 2005 ), and Heartland Park Topeka ( 2006 – 2008 ).

Richard Petty could not come to contractual terms with Dodge before the 1969 season, but when he saw the Daytona, he demanded that Plymouth make something similar, but they declined ( for the time being ).

Since 1995, U. S. television ratings for the Daytona 500 have been the highest for any auto race of the year, surpassing the traditional leader, the Indianapolis 500 which in turn greatly surpasses the Daytona 500 in in-track attendance and international viewing.

The winner of the Daytona 500 is presented with the Harley J. Earl Trophy in Victory Lane, and the winning car is displayed, in race-winning condition, for one year at Daytona 500 Experience, a museum and gallery adjacent to Daytona International Speedway.

The qualifying procedure is unique for the Daytona 500.

Prior to 2005, after the top two cars were set, the top 14 cars in the qualifying races advanced to the field, and then between six ( 1998 – 2003 ), eight ( 1995 – 97, 2004 ), or ten ( until 1994 ) fastest cars which did not advance from the qualifying race were added, and, since 1976, between one and seven cars were added by previous year's points performance and or championship, except for 1985, when no such car was eligible for a provisional starting spot, the only time that happened in the Daytona 500 from when the provisional was added in 1976 through 2004.

The television ratings for the Daytona 500 have surpassed those of the larger Indianapolis 500 ( which has much larger physical attendance and international attendance ) since 1995, even though the 1995 race was available in far fewer homes than the year before.

Meanwhile, the Rolex Sports Car Series has overhauled its Daytona Prototype class for 2012, allowing for production-based designs.

In a similar suit in 2007, two women sued Deslin Hotels, Girls Gone Wild, and various websites that published footage of their appearance in another 2001 Daytona Beach contest.

The Wetherells spent that first fall and winter at Daytona Beach in the woods in an old house at what then was the northeast comer of Ridgewood and Volusia Avenue but is now known as International Speedway Boulevard ( U. S. Routes l and 92 ).

But in the spring Flemming got them to move to Holly Hill, where they bought from him the on Washington Avenue, now LPGA Boulevard, between Daytona Avenue and Dixie Highway, for the sum of $ 75.

The AMA Road Racing Series includes the AMA American Superbike Championship, the AMA Daytona Sportbike Championship ( which incorporates the former AMA Supersport Championship and the now inactive AMA Formula Xtreme ), and the new AMA Supersport Championship, which is limited to riders of age 16-21 on near stock 600cc motorcycles.

It was a mid-engined car like the Dino, and the now flat-12 engine was mounted longitudinally rather than transversely ( as it was mounted in the Dino ; the Daytona was a conventional front-engine, longitudinal design ).

With the new pavement at Daytona, three-wide racing is now possible and multi-car wrecks could become more common.

The Goody's Dash Series ( known now as the ISCARS series with its new ownership ) used restrictor plates at Bristol during at least the last years of the series ' existence when the cars were using six-cylinder engines ( compared to the traditional four cylinder engines ), in addition to their Daytona races.

He also occasionally anchored their now-defunct racing news show, NASCAR RaceDay, and at CBS, he was a pit reporter for their coverage of NASCAR Winston Cup Series ( now Sprint Cup Series ) races, most notably the Daytona 500.

Also, it is Waltrip's tear-filled voice that can be heard saying " I just hope Dale's okay ," during the film's depiction of Earnhardt's fatal crash at Daytona due to the use of NASCAR on Fox's original footage and commentary, which is now owned by NASCAR Images ( starting in 2001, NASCAR Images owns all NASCAR race footage ; they also own the footage of the former Sunbelt Video ).

Even earlier than that, the road crossed one of the bridges at Daytona Beach and headed north along the east side of the Halifax River on what is now John Anderson Drive, crossing west to John Anderson Highway at the Knox Memorial Bridge.

Following several podium finishes with the still underpowered two liter Porsche 906 and later models, he won the 1968 24 Hours of Daytona in a 907 as well as the Sebring 12 Hours again, now together with Swiss Jo Siffert.
