The Go-Between is a novel by L. P. Hartley ( 1895 – 1972 ), published in London in 1953.

The Go-Between was adapted from the novel by the playwright Harold Pinter in the third of his collaborations with film director Joseph Losey.

In The Go-Between, a young middle class boy named Leo Colston ( Dominic Guard ), a guest for the summer with an upper class family, becomes the messenger for an affair between the daughter, Marian ( Julie Christie ,) and a working class farmer named Ted Burgess ( Alan Bates ).

Bates went on to star in The Go-Between, An Unmarried Woman, Nijinsky, and The Rose with Bette Midler, as well as playing varied roles in television drama, including The Mayor of Casterbridge, Harold Pinter's The Collection, A Voyage Round My Father, An Englishman Abroad ( as Guy Burgess ), and Pack of Lies.

The first of Pinter's three film collaborations with Losey, which also include Accident ( 1967 ) and The Go-Between ( 1970 ), The Servant is a tightly-constructed psychological dramatic film about the relationships among the four central characters examining issues relating to class, servitude, and the ennui of the upper classes.

Losey's other collaborations with Pinter, Accident and The Go-Between, share a resemblance to The Servant in that they offer the same savage indictment of the waning English class system, a theme which British film-makers had not previously explored.

However, recent classifications have abandoned Mon – Khmer as a taxon, either reducing it in scope or making it synonymous with the larger family ( Diffloth 2005, Sidwell 2009 ).
