In 1965, another gospel song emerged -- " People Get Ready " by Mayfield and the Impressions.

Popular modal standards include Davis's " All Blues " and " So What " ( both 1959 ), John Coltrane's " Impressions " ( 1963 ) and Herbie Hancock's " Maiden Voyage " ( 1965 ).

Whilst touring in late 1965, the Byrds only had a hastily prepared tape recording of Ravi Shankar on one side of the cassette, and Coltrane's Impressions and Africa / Brass on the other.

Although the basic idea for the song had been discussed during the band's flight to England, it didn't actually begin to take shape until The Byrds ' November 1965 tour of the U. S. In order to alleviate the boredom of travelling from show to show during the tour, Crosby had brought along cassette recordings of Ravi Shankar's music and the John Coltrane albums Impressions and Africa / Brass, which were on constant rotation on the tour bus.

Curtis Mayfield not only scored many hits with his group, The Impressions, but wrote many hit songs for Chicago artists and produced hits on his own labels for The Fascinations and the Five Stairsteps.

The group seemed destined for stardom after the release of their second album, Dreamer, which featured the soulful title track, the hit " Take Me For a Little While " and their cover of The Impressions ' " I'm Still Waiting ", which each gave them moderate chart success.

In 1958 it produced the first recognized soul hit in Chicago, Jerry Butler and The Impressions ’ “ For Your Precious Love ”.

It became The Impressions ' first hit and gold record.

In 2009 new impressions show The Impressions Show with Culshaw and Stephenson was a big hit, which starred impressionists Jon Culshaw and Debra Stephenson donning Britain's most famous faces.

In 1976, The Impressions left Curtom and Mayfield behind for Cotillion Records, and had their final major hit with " Loving Power ".

In 2008, Universal Music & Hip O Records released Movin ' On Up-the first-ever video compilation of The Impressions, featuring brand new interviews with original Impressions members Sam Gooden and Fred Cash, along with taped interviews with the late Curtis Mayfield and video performances of the group's greatest hits and several of Mayfield's solo hits. The group's first million-selling hit song " For Your Precious Love ", featuring original lead singer Jerry Butler on lead, is ranked # 327 on the Rolling Stone magazine's list of Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Songs of All Time ), and their hit People Get Ready is ranked # 24 on that same list. Also, The Impressions ' album / CD The Anthology 1961 – 1977 is ranked at # 179 on Rolling Stone Magazine's list of the The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

Gene Chandler recorded the # 3 Billboard R & B hit, " Get Down ", a huge disco hit in 1978 / 79, and Davis then brought on board The Chi-Lites ( with lead vocalist and producer Eugene Record also taking an executive post ), The Dells and The Impressions.

" So What " and " Impressions " follow the same AABA song form and were in D Dorian for the A sections and modulated a half step up to E-flat Dorian for the B section.

" Dear Old Stockholm " is a Swedish folk song, best known in the English-speaking world for versions by jazz artists such as Stan Getz, Miles Davis, Paul Chambers and John Coltrane's Impressions album.

John Einarson has noted that the influence of Coltrane's saxophone playing and, in particular, his song " India " from the Impressions album, can be clearly heard in " Eight Miles High "— most noticeably in McGuinn's reoccurring twelve-string guitar solo.

The Impressions reached the height of their popularity in the mid-to-late -' 60s with a string of Mayfield compositions that included " Keep on Pushing ," " People Get Ready ", " It's All Right " ( Top 10 ), the uptempo " Talking about My Baby "( Top 20 ), " Woman's Got Soul ", " Choice of Colors ,"( Top 20 ), " Fool For You ," " This is My Country " and " Check Out Your Mind.
