Curtis Mayfield not only scored many hits with his group, The Impressions, but wrote many hit songs for Chicago artists and produced hits on his own labels for The Fascinations and the Five Stairsteps.

Mayfield was a prolific songwriter in Chicago even outside his work for The Impressions, writing and producing scores of hits for many other artists.

The Impressions were best known for such hits as “ Gypsy Woman ” and “ People Get Ready ”.

Butler ’ s solo career had a string of hits, including the Top 10 successes " He Will Break Your Heart ", " Find Another Girl ", " I'm A-Telling You " ( all written by fellow Impression Curtis Mayfield and featuring Mayfield as harmony vocal ), the million selling " Only the Strong Survive ," " Moon River ," " Need To Belong " ( recorded with the Impressions after he went solo ), " Make It Easy On Yourself ," " Let It Be Me " ( with Betty Everett ), " Brand New Me ," " Ain't Understanding Mellow " ( with Brenda Lee Eager ), " Hey, Western Union Man ", and " Never Give You Up.

Working first at Chicago's Twinight Records, he later did the arrangements for hits by The Unifics (" Court of Love " and " The Beginning Of My End ") and took part in projects by The Staple Singers, Jerry Butler, Aretha Franklin, The Impressions and Curtis Mayfield.

He is best known for his million-selling hits, " Duke Of Earl ," and " Groovy Situation ," and his associations with the Dukays, the Impressions and Curtis Mayfield.

Inductees into both the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Vocal Group Hall of Fame, The Impressions are best known for their 1960s string of hits, many of which were heavily influenced by gospel music and served as inspirational anthems for the Civil Rights Movement. They are also 1998 Grammy Hall of Fame Inductees for their hit,

Mayfield wrote a number of Butler's early solo hits, and used the money to get The Impressions to move to Chicago, Illinois.

Over the next two years, more Impressions message tracks, including the # 1 R & B hit " Choice of Colors " ( 1969 ) and the # 3 " Check Out Your Mind " ( 1970 ), became big hits for the group.

In 2008, Universal Music & Hip O Records released Movin ' On Up-the first-ever video compilation of The Impressions, featuring brand new interviews with original Impressions members Sam Gooden and Fred Cash, along with taped interviews with the late Curtis Mayfield and video performances of the group's greatest hits and several of Mayfield's solo hits. The group's first million-selling hit song " For Your Precious Love ", featuring original lead singer Jerry Butler on lead, is ranked # 327 on the Rolling Stone magazine's list of Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Songs of All Time ), and their hit People Get Ready is ranked # 24 on that same list. Also, The Impressions ' album / CD The Anthology 1961 – 1977 is ranked at # 179 on Rolling Stone Magazine's list of the The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

The Impressions reached the height of their popularity in the mid-to-late -' 60s with a string of Mayfield compositions that included " Keep on Pushing ," " People Get Ready ", " It's All Right " ( Top 10 ), the uptempo " Talking about My Baby "( Top 20 ), " Woman's Got Soul ", " Choice of Colors ,"( Top 20 ), " Fool For You ," " This is My Country " and " Check Out Your Mind.

In 1965, another gospel song emerged -- " People Get Ready " by Mayfield and the Impressions.

Gene Chandler recorded the # 3 Billboard R & B hit, " Get Down ", a huge disco hit in 1978 / 79, and Davis then brought on board The Chi-Lites ( with lead vocalist and producer Eugene Record also taking an executive post ), The Dells and The Impressions.

The group seemed destined for stardom after the release of their second album, Dreamer, which featured the soulful title track, the hit " Take Me For a Little While " and their cover of The Impressions ' " I'm Still Waiting ", which each gave them moderate chart success.

In 1958 it produced the first recognized soul hit in Chicago, Jerry Butler and The Impressions ’ “ For Your Precious Love ”.
