The Markkula Center for Applied Ethics and the Center for Science, Technology, and Society offer programs that serve the University's Catholic, Jesuit ethos, and identity.

After his stint at Apple Computer, he continued on to found Echelon Corporation, ACM Aviation, San Jose Jet Center and Rana Creek Habitat Restoration and to endow the Markkula Center for Applied Ethics at Santa Clara University, where he now chairs the Board.

The Independent Institute is the recipient of numerous awards, including two Mencken Awards, seven Sir Antony Fisher International Memorial Awards, the Benjamin Franklin Awards from the Independent Book Publishers Association, two IPPY Awards from Independent Publisher Magazine, and a 4M Highest Rating for Ethics in Social and Public Policy from the Markkula Center for Applied Ethics at Santa Clara University.

Apple Inc. uses a " John Appleseed " character as a John Smith in many of its recent adverts, video tutorials, and keynote presentation examples ; this was also the alias of Mike Markkula under which he published several programs for the Apple II.

Formerly director of manufacturing at National Semiconductor, Scott was persuaded by Mike Markkula to take the CEO position at Apple, as the co-founders — Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak — were both seen as insufficiently experienced for the job at the time.

Wigginton wrote several early programs for the Apple II, including a checkbook-balancing program co-authored with Apple's vice-president of Marketing Mike Markkula.

Jobs eventually met " Mike " Markkula who co-signed a bank loan for US $ 250, 000, and the three formed Apple Computer on April 1, 1976.

Later that year, venture capitalist Arthur Rock and Mike Markkula helped develop a business plan and convert the partnership to a corporation.

Communist Party leader Gus Hall ( originally Arvo Gustav Halberg ), mathematician Lars Ahlfors, musicians Dave Mustaine and Jaco Pastorius, computer scientists Linus Torvalds and Alfred Aho, co-founder of Apple Mike Markkula, astronaut Timothy L. Kopra, officer Larry Thorne, musician Einar Aaron Swan, ice hockey player Matt Niskanen and serial killer Aileen Wuornos.

Following this abrupt event, he was moved to vice chairman, a title with little power, and Mike Markkula, the man who had hired Scott, replaced him.

Armas Clifford " Mike " Markkula, Jr. ( born February 11, 1942 ) is an American entrepreneur who was an angel investor and second CEO of Apple Computer, Inc., providing early critical funding and managerial support.

Markkula received Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in electrical engineering from the University of Southern California.

In 1977, Markkula brought his business expertise along with US $ 250, 000 ($ 80, 000 as an equity investment in the company and $ 170, 000 as a loan ) and became a one-third owner of Apple and employee number 3.

In 1985 Markkula took John Sculley's side in a dispute with Jobs, causing the latter to leave the company, and in 1993 he helped to force Sculley out.

In addition to providing " adult supervision " to the younger Jobs and Wozniak, as a trained engineer Markkula also possessed technical skills.
