Following the Royal Navy's revenge at the Battle of the Falkland Islands a month later, the only surviving German cruiser, SMS Dresden, was finally hunted down and cornered at Más a Tierra early in 1915, where she was scuttled after a brief battle with British cruisers.

In 1905, aged seventeen, Canaris joined the German Imperial Navy and by the outbreak of World War I was serving on board the SMS Dresden as an intelligence officer.

Only SMS Dresden and the auxiliary Seydlitz managed to escape, but Seydlitz was interned and Dresden was eventually discovered in the Juan Fernández Islands and scuttled by her crew during the Battle of Mas a Tierra.

Felix Graf von Luckner ( born Dresden, Germany, 9 June 1881, died Malmö, Sweden, 13 April 1966 ) was a German nobleman, navy officer, author and noted sailor who earned the epithet Der Seeteufel ( the Sea-Devil ) -- and his crew that of Die Piraten des Kaisers ( the Emperor's Pirates ) -- for his exploits in command of the sailing commerce raider SMS Seeadler ( Sea Eagle ) in 1916-1917.

He went into exile, first traveling to Kingston, Jamaica, aboard the German cruiser SMS Dresden.

Most of the German squadron was eventually destroyed at the Battle of the Falkland Islands, but the British eventually found SMS Dresden anchored and essentially non-operational at an isolated Pacific island.
