There are several species of Saturniidae that are also farmed for their silk, such as the Ailanthus moth ( Samia cynthia group of species ), the Chinese Oak Silkmoth ( Antheraea pernyi ), the Assam Silkmoth ( Antheraea assamensis ), and the Japanese Silk Moth ( Antheraea yamamai ).

European states initiated efforts at this time to curb Ottoman control of the traditional overland trade routes between East Asia and Western Europe, which started with the Silk Road.

Because of this trade on what became known as the Silk Route, Bukhoro and Samarqand eventually became extremely wealthy cities, and at times Mawarannahr was one of the most influential and powerful Persian provinces of antiquity.

Through use of the land trade along the Silk Road and maritime trade by sail at sea, the Tang were able to gain many new technologies, cultural practices, rare luxury, and contemporary items.

Early Buddhist monks arrived at Dunhuang via the ancient Northern Silk Road, the northernmost route of about in length, which connected the ancient Chinese capital of Xi ' an westward over the Wushao Ling Pass to Wuwei and on to Kashgar.

The Mogao Caves or Mogao Grottoes (), also known as the Caves of the Thousand Buddhas (), form a system of 492 temples southeast of the center of Dunhuang, an oasis strategically located at a religious and cultural crossroads on the Silk Road, in Gansu province, China.

During late nineteenth century and early twentieth century, Western explorers began to show interest in the ancient Silk Road and the lost cities of Central Asia, and those who passed through Dunhuang noted the murals and artifacts such as the Stele of Sulaiman at Mogao.
