Starting in 1983, THX certification of the cinema sound experience quantified the parameters of good audio for watching films, including requirements for subwoofer performance levels and enough isolation from outside sounds so that noise did not interfere with the listening experience.

Tomlinson M. Holman ( born 1946 ) is an American film theorist, audio engineer, and inventor of film technologies, notably the Lucasfilm THX sound system.

The THX system is not a recording technology, and it does not specify a sound recording format: all sound formats, whether digital ( Dolby Digital, SDDS ) or analog ( Dolby Stereo, Ultra-Stereo ), can be " shown in THX.

THX-certified theaters provide a high-quality, predictable playback environment to ensure that any film soundtrack mixed in THX will sound as near as possible to the intentions of the mixing engineer.

THX has created a rigorous certification process for additional products including home audio, home theater, video, and automotive sound components and products.

From there, THX began to appear before all movies from July 1, 1983, until August 30, 1997, when THX was no longer classified as a " motion picture sound system ".

Prior to September 1, 1997, no longer being known as a " sound system ", THX was removed from all theaters, with the exception for a couple of trailers that THX had then-recently created ( such as its own mascot, Tex the Robot ) in 1996, would vaguely be seen in theaters.

For example, in order for a theater to be THX certified, it must have an ambient sound level of NC-30 or less.

In the summer of 2006, the Empire 1 sound system was completely overhauled, installing a 56 kilowatt THX certified sound system.

Subsequently, he worked on George Lucas's THX 1138 and American Graffiti and Coppola's The Godfather before editing picture and mixing sound on Coppola's The Conversation, for which he received an Academy Award nomination in sound in 1974.

The city's authorities discover THX's and LUH's crimes of sexual intercourse and drug evasion ( because of a bureaucratic error, THX is briefly " mind-locked " while at a critical juncture of android construction, which almost leads to disaster ).

THX is imprisoned in an area of the city that resembles a white limbo world.

THX is consigned to another region of limbo, this one populated by a collection of other prisoners, including SEN. Knowing that THX filed the complaint against him, SEN nevertheless rallies him to join his undescribed cause.

* The music video for rap group Gangstarr's 1997 single " You Know my Steez ", directed by Terry Heller, is a faithful homage to THX 1138, from the costuming and iconic cinematography to an upside-down miniature BART tunnel and the duplication of the famous extreme telephoto sunset ending.

After the film, references to 1138 ( and sometimes to THX ) are scattered throughout Lucas ' films, Lucasfilm productions and LucasArts computer games.

Even in media unrelated to Lucasfilm, the number is occasionally featured ( generally without the prefix THX ), sometimes to popularize the injoke or to tribute Lucas and / or Lucasfilm media.
