Seven stories are inspired by a nursery rhyme: And Then There Were None by Ten Little Indians ; One, Two, Buckle My Shoe by One, Two, Buckle My Shoe ; Five Little Pigs by This Little Piggy ; Crooked House by There Was a Crooked Man ; A Pocket Full of Rye by Sing a Song of Sixpence ; Hickory Dickory Dock by Hickory Dickory Dock, and Three Blind Mice by Three Blind Mice.

Some old characters, like The Three Bears and Little Plum, have more recently made a return.

The character and themes from the comic strip Little Nemo were used in a song " Scenes from a Night's Dream " written by Phil Collins and Tony Banks of the progressive rock group Genesis on their 1978 recording, ... And Then There Were Three ... Another progressive rock group, from Germany, called Scara Brae also recorded a musical impression of the comic on their rare self titled disc from 1981 ( the track was actually recorded 2 years earlier ).

Prominent examples in the US include the so-called Little Three, Colby-Bates-Bowdoin, and Little Ivy colleges in New England, the surviving, predominantly female Seven Sisters colleges along the northeastern seaboard, and the Claremont Colleges in Southern California, but similar institutions are found all over the country.

The 1993 children's book The Three Little Wolves and the Big Bad Pig inverts the cast and makes a few changes to the plot: the wolves build a brick house, then a concrete house, then a steel house, and finally a house of flowers.

In an advert in the British newspaper The Guardian, the aftermath of the Three Little Pigs tale is told in the style of modern news media coverage, including social media reaction and the sociopolitical consequences of the story.

In 2003 the Flemish company Studio 100 created a musical called Three Little Pigs ( Dutch: De 3 Biggetjes ), which follows the three daughters of the pig with the house of stone with new original songs, introducing a completely new story loosely based on the original story.
