Walsall and line
The line running from Stourbridge to Walsall via Dudley Port and Wednesbury closed in the 1960s, but the Birmingham to Wolverhampton line via Tipton is still a major transport route.
Walsall finally received a railway line in 1847, 48 years after canals reached the town, Bescot having been served since 1838, by the Grand Junction Railway.
It opened in 1850, and in its heyday was a hub of services east to Birmingham ( via a junction at Great Bridge ), Walsall and Lichfield ; north to Wolverhampton, Tipton and Coseley ; and south-west to Stourbridge, as well as a line that served the small communities on the way to Old Hill and Halesowen.
A tram serving Wolverhampton's bus and rail stations, part of the Phase Two Extensions, was made a separate project following stagnation of the project to build a line to Walsall.
