The dialects of the rest of the Dutch province of Zeeland, Zeelandic, are sometimes also included in West Flemish although this classification is controversial.

* 1940 – World War II: the old city centre of the Dutch town of Middelburg is bombed by the German Luftwaffe, to force the surrender of the Dutch armies in Zeeland.

The Storm Surge Barrier on the Oosterschelde is the most popular visitor attraction in Zeeland.

Landerd is the result of a merger between the formerly independent municipalities of Schaijk and Zeeland on 1 January 1994.

In 1345 the emperor further antagonized the lay princes by conferring Hainaut, Holland, Zeeland and Friesland upon his wife Margaret of Holland.

After the Fourth Anglo-Dutch War, the VOC was a financial wreck, and after vain attempts by the provincial States of Holland and Zeeland to reorganize it, was nationalised on 1 March 1796 by the new Batavian Republic.

The settlement was invaded by seven Dutch ships ( from the Zeeland region ), led by Abraham Crijnssen, on 26 February 1667.
