His death is his alone, yet each man can see his own death in the crucifixion of Jesus.

* 33 – Generally agreed-upon date for the historical crucifixion of Jesus of Nazareth, the central figure of Christianity.

The pope chooses the image on the outside: under Pope Benedict XVI it is a modern depiction of the crucifixion of Jesus, with Mary and John to each side.

Christian Science teaches that Christ Jesus was sent by God and that his history is factual, including the virgin birth, the crucifixion, the resurrection, and the ascension.

It is especially important in the Catholic Church, but is also used in Orthodox and Eastern Catholic, as well as Anglican, and Lutheran churches, ( though less often in other Protestant churches ), and it emphasizes Jesus ' sacrifice — his death by crucifixion, which Christians believe brought about the redemption of mankind.

Most Christians consider that the Law was necessary as an intermediate stage, but once the crucifixion of Jesus occurred, adherence to civil and ceremonial Law was superseded by the New Covenant since the purpose of these laws was to dictate a proper relationship to God through the tabernacles and the temples in Jerusalem.

It also states that a religious sect can be considered a cult if its beliefs involve a denial of any of the essential Christian teachings such as salvation, the Trinity, Jesus himself as a person, his works and his miracles, his crucifixion, his death, his resurrection, his return, and the Rapture.

This act hastened the death of the person but was also meant to deter those who observed the crucifixion from committing offenses.

Subjects did suffer rapidly increasing pain, which is consistent with the Roman use of crucifixion to achieve a prolonged, agonizing death.

Since death does not follow immediately on crucifixion, survival after a short period of crucifixion is possible, as in the case of those who choose each year as a devotional practice to be non-lethally crucified.

The hypothesis that the Ancient Roman custom of crucifixion may have developed out of a primitive custom of arbori suspendere — hanging on an arbor infelix ( unfortunate tree ) dedicated to the gods of the nether world — is rejected by William A. Oldfather, who shows that this form of execution ( the supplicium more maiorum, punishment in accordance with the custom of our ancestors ) consisted of suspending someone from a tree, not dedicated to any particular gods, and flogging him to death.

Prior to crucifixion, victims were often savagely whipped with barbed metal lashes, to induce exsanguination ( bleeding to death ).

In The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, Aslan is a Christ-like figure who suffers a death of atonement and returns to life in a similar way to Christ's crucifixion and resurrection.

The Bible provides a number of references to nails, including the story in Judges of the wife who drives a nail into the temple of her husband while he is asleep, the provision of iron for nails by King David for Solomon's Temple, and of course the crucifixion of Christ.
