All of the lines in the KTM network are single-track, except for the section of the main line between Ipoh railway station and Seremban railway station, and also the branch lines from Port Klang Komuter station to Batu Caves Komuter station and from Sungai Gadut Komuter station to Tanjung Malim railway station, which is now double tracked and electrified to 25 kV AC, to accommodate electric commuter trains, the KTM Class 92.

The Dyre Avenue Line was originally part of the four-track main line of the New York, Westchester and Boston Railway, an electrified commuter line that connected White Plains and Port Chester to a station at the Harlem River adjacent to the IRT Third Avenue Line.

Prior to 1976, the SVM line, which was electrified between Reading Terminal and Norristown in 1933, ran parallel to the PRR's Schuylkill Branch ( which was also electrified to Norristown, in 1930 as part of the PRR's main electrification project ), which connected Philadelphia, via the East-West Mainline, with Norristown, Reading, and Pottstown, Pennsylvania.

Unlike the New Haven Line or New Canaan Branch, the Danbury branch is not electrified and uses diesel locomotives in push-pull operation.
