Many of the total of 14 banquet and beer halls had a Wagnerian theme-indeed, the very name of the complex was taken from the Wagner opera Das Rheingold, the first of the four parts of the cycle Der Ring des Nibelungen, although this name did hark back to the building's planned former role as a concert venue.

In 1974, Steinman worked with college friend Barry Keating on a musical called Rhinegold, based on Richard Wagner's opera Das Rheingold, writing the music and co-writing the script.

It was a great success at its premiere on December 9, 1836, under the direction of Catterino Cavos, who had written an opera on the same subject in Italy.

Over the next few years, Véron brought on Auber's Gustave III ( 1833, libretto by Scribe, later adapted for Verdi's Un ballo in maschera ), and Fromental Halévy's La Juive ( 1835, libretto also by Scribe ), and commissioned Meyerbeer's next opera Les Huguenots ( 1836, libretto by Scribe and Deschamps ), whose success was to prove the most enduring of all grand operas during the 19th century.

The opera was given its premiere performance on 27 November 1836 in Saint Petersburg conducted by Catterino Cavos with set designs by Andrei Roller.

He wrote an opera to words by Dickens, The Village Coquettes, produced in 1836 ; The Barbers of Bassora in 1837, and The Outpost in 1838, the last two at Covent Garden.
