However, as a translation of Omar Khayyam's quatrains, it is not noted for its fidelity.

The translation eventually consisted of 395 quatrains.

The first French translation, of 464 quatrains in prose, was made by J. B. Nicolas, chief interpreter at the French Embassy in Persia in 1867.

An English translation of 152 quatrains, published in 1888.

The roots of written Gallo literature are traced back to Le Livre des Manières written in 1178 by Etienne de Fougères, a poetical text of 336 quatrains and the earliest known Romance text from Brittany, and to Le Roman d ' Aquin, an anonymous 12th century chanson de geste transcribed in the 15th century but which nevertheless retains features typical of the mediaeval Romance of Brittany.

The Knight in the Panther's Skin ( Vepkhist ' q ' aosani meaning " Man in tiger's skin ", " Owner of tiger's skin ") is an epic poem, consisting of over 1600 shairi quatrains, was written in the 12th century by the Georgian epic-poet Shota Rustaveli, who was a Prince and Treasurer at the royal court of Queen Tamar of Georgia.

This early version was only 11 quatrains and the lines were spoken by a bereaved husband.

The initial letters of the quatrains, indicated by large initials in some manuscripts, form an acrostic with the names Gotefrid-Tristan-Isolde, which runs throughout the poem.
