* Construction of the Giant Wild Goose Pagoda in Chang ' an ( modern Xi ' an ), Tang Dynasty China, is completed in this year during the reign of Emperor Gaozong of Tang.

Wu Zetian was born as Wu Zhao, in Lizhou ( 利州 ) ( modern day Guangyuan City in Sichuan Province ), or else in the imperial capital of Chang ' an, during the reign of Emperor Gaozu of Tang, and lived from 17 February 624 – 16 December 705 < ref name = death >

Near the end of Emperor Wu's reign, there was an incident when magicians claimed that an aura of an emperor was appearing from Chang ' an prisons.

Chenghua's reign was also more autocratic than his predecessors ' and freedom was sharply curtailed when Chenghua established institutes such as the Xi Chang ( to complement the existing Dong Chang ), monitoring all civilians ' actions and words.

In 781, the searchers mistakenly believed that an adoptive daughter of Gao Lishi, a powerful eunuch during Emperor Xuanzong's reign, was Empress Dowager Shen, and she was taken to Chang ' an to be honored as such.

Yang Guang was born in 569, during the reign of Emperor Wu of Northern Zhou.

It was presumably that no male descendant of Huo Qubing nor Huo Guang survived, as in 2 during the reign of Emperor Ping of Han, it was Huo Yang, a great-grandson of Huo's paternal cousin, chosen to inherit Huo Guang as Marquess of Bolu.

Her father was the statesman Huo Guang, who served as regent for Emperor Zhao and who remained exceedingly powerful during Emperor Xuan's reign until his death in 68 BC.

The period between the foundation of the Han Dynasty and Wang Mang's reign is known as the Western Han Dynasty () or Former Han Dynasty () ( 206 BCE – 9 CE ).

During the turbulent reign of Wang Mang, Han lost control over the Tarim Basin, which was conquered by the Northern Xiongnu in 63 CE and used as a base to invade Han's Hexi Corridor in Gansu.

During Emperor Ai's reign, he also stripped the Wang clan ( Empress Wang's clan ), which had been powerful during Emperor Cheng's reign, of much of their power, and substituted members of the Fu and Ding clans in their stead ( which, ironically, led to the effect that the people, who were not enamored with the Wangs initially, longing for their return to power due to the people associating the departure of the Wangs from power with Emperor Ai's incompetence in administration ).

Late in Wang Mang's reign as the emperor of Xin Dynasty, there were agrarian revolts virtually everywhere in the empire, due to Wang's incompetent rule and the natural disasters of the time.

Under the encouragement of the generals Yang Hu and Wang Jun and the strategist Zhang Hua, however, Emperor Wu, while sending a number of generals to combat the Xianbei and the Qiang, prepared the southern and eastern border regions for war against Eastern Wu throughout this part of his reign.

However these did not last and by the closing years of his reign, governmental affairs once again fell into the hands of eunuchs, notably Wang Zhi.

Taichang was born in the tenth year of the Longqing Emperor's reign to a palace woman née Wang, serving on the staff of Wanli's mother, Empress Dowager Li.

During his reign, Shenzong became interested in Wang Anshi's policies and appointed Wang as Chancellor.
