He became Secretary-General in 1981, and when the party was restructured at its Thirteenth Congress in 1996, he was moved to the position of President of the PS, while Ousmane Tanor Dieng became First Secretary, having been proposed by Diouf.

In 1985, she played Nurse in Romeo and Juliet with the Royal Shakespeare Company and her other credits with the RSC in the mid to late-1980s included Maria in Twelfth Night, First Witch in Macbeth, Glinda / Aunt Em in The Wizard of Oz and Parthy Ann in an Opera North version of Show Boat.

Other memorable RSC performances were Twelfth Night, The Relapse and London Assurance for which he received the 1975 Drama Desk Special Award.

In 2009 he portrayed Sir Andrew Augecheek in the RSC Production of Twelfth Night.

He played Nell's grandfather in ITV's Christmas 2007 adaptation of The Old Curiosity Shop, and returned to the stage to play Malvolio in Shakespeare's Twelfth Night ( 2009 ) for the Donmar Warehouse at Wyndham's Theatre in London.

In 2002, she took time off from cinema to play two roles in Sam Mendes's repertory productions of Uncle Vanya and Twelfth Night, first at Mendes's Donmar Warehouse in London and later at the Brooklyn Academy of Music.

For his role in Shakespeare's Twelfth Night at the Donmar Warehouse in 2002, Strong was nominated for the 2003 Laurence Olivier Award for Best Performance in a Supporting Role.

The Warehouse was an RSC workshop as much as a showcase and the seasons were remarkably innovative, including Trevor Nunn's acclaimed Stratford 1976 Macbeth, starring Judi Dench and Ian McKellen, which opened at the Covent Garden venue in September 1977 before transferring to the Young Vic.

In 1977 the RSC commissioned a new play for the opening of their new London theatre, the Warehouse, which would be The Bundle.
