Brian Wilson Kernighan (; born 1942 ) is a Canadian computer scientist who worked at Bell Labs alongside Unix creators Ken Thompson and Dennis Ritchie and contributed to the development of Unix.

It was mostly the work of Ken Thompson, with contributions from Dennis Ritchie, and first appeared circa 1969.

Certainly major contributors to computer science such as Edsger Dijkstra and Donald Knuth, as well as the inventors of popular software such as Linus Torvalds ( Linux ), and Dennis Ritchie and Ken Thompson ( the C programming language ) are likely to be included in any such list ; see also List of programmers.

The seminal work is by Jurgen Habermas in Germany but the most extensive literature has been in English, led by theorists such as Jane Mansbridge, Joshua Cohen, Amy Gutmann and Dennis Thompson.

Upon Tyner's switch from bassist to vocalist, he was initially replaced by Pat Burrows, however the lineup was stabilised in 1965 by the arrival of Michael Davis and Dennis Thompson to replace Burrows and Gaspar respectively.

Dennis Thompson asserted years later that " Country Joe " McDonald ( Country Joe and the Fish ) was also present at the scene ( Thompson, 2000 ).

2003 saw the three surviving members of MC5 — Kramer, bassist Michael Davis, and drummer Dennis Thompson — performing as the MC5 at the 100 Club in London with Fred " Sonic " Smith's place temporarily being taken by Nicke Andersson of The Hellacopters, vocal chores at that time being filled variously by David Vanian of The Damned, Lemmy of Motörhead, Ian Astbury of The Cult, and singer Kate O ' Brien, as well as seeing Charles Moore and Buzzy Jones reprise their roles in the brass section from the High Time album.
