With support from Han Sui, his father's sworn brother, Ma Chao attacked Chang ' an and conquered the city easily, after which he advanced towards Tong Pass.

Yang Zhao ( 楊昭 ) ( 584 – 606 ), formally Crown Prince Yuande ( 元德太子, literally " the discerning and nurturing crown prince "), posthumously honored as Emperor Xiaocheng ( 孝成皇帝, literally " the filial and successful emperor ") with the temple name Shizong ( 世宗 ) during the brief reign of his son Yang Tong, was a crown prince of the Chinese dynasty Sui Dynasty.

Knowing the nominal leader of the Coalition of Guanxi forces, Han Sui, did not leave any troops guarding the shallow of Puban, Xu suggested Cao to send him north and cross the Yellow River via the Puban Ford ( 浦阪津 ) to the west side of the river to circumvent Tong Pass.

After Ma Teng was summoned to Xuchang, his son Ma Chao took over his forces, and reconciled with Han Sui, and together initiated an alliance ( the Alliance of Warlords within Passes ) which included Yang Qiu, Li Kan, Cheng Yi and others, to resist Cao Cao from the East of Tong Pass.

During the Battle of Tong Pass against Ma Chao and Han Sui in 211, Cao Cao led his troops north across the Ji River ( 濟河 ) in an attempt to circle to the rear of the enemy.

Once he did, he headed for Chang ' an himself, while sending Li Jiancheng to capture the territory around the Tong Pass region to prevent Sui forces at Luoyang from reinforcing Chang ' an and Li Shimin north of the Wei River to capture territory there.

Meanwhile, the Sui officials at Luoyang declared another grandson of Emperor Yang, Emperor Gong's brother Yang Tong the Prince of Yue, as emperor, and refused to recognize the regime change in Chang ' an.

In spring 619, Wang had Yang Tong yield the throne to him, ending Sui and establishing a new state of Zheng.

Emperor Yang of Sui ( 隋煬帝, 569-April 11, 618 ), personal name Yang Guang ( 楊廣 ), alternative name Ying ( 英 ), nickname Amo ( 阿摩 ), known as Emperor Ming ( 明帝 ) during the brief reign of his grandson Yang Tong ), was the second son of Emperor Wen of Sui, and the second emperor of China's Sui Dynasty.

Soon afterwards, Cao Cao was attacked by an army led by Han Sui and Ma Chao in the Battle of Tong Pass.

Wang Shichong ( 王世充 ) ( died 621 ), courtesy name Xingman ( 行滿 ), was a general of the Chinese Sui Dynasty who deposed Sui's last emperor Yang Tong and briefly ruled as the emperor of a succeeding state of Zheng.

In spring 618, after his forces were reinforced by 70, 000 men sent by Emperor Yang's grandson Yang Tong the Prince of Yue, who was nominally in command at Luoyang, Wang launched a major attack on Li, but was defeated by Li, allowing Li to then crush the other Sui forces as well.

When the news reached Luoyang, the Sui officials at Luoyang, including Wang, declared Yang Tong emperor.

In summer, after Yuan and Lu advocated the plan, Yang Tong entered into a peace agreement with Li, where Li accepted Sui titles and nominally submitted to Yang Tong.
