In 1969 Malcolm Arnold conducted the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in the recording of Deep Purple's Concerto for Group and Orchestra composed by the group's organist, Jon Lord.

Lloyd Webber has given more than 50 works their premiere recordings and has inspired new compositions for cello from composers as diverse as Malcolm Arnold ( Fantasy for Cello, 1986, and Cello Concerto, 1989 ), Joaquín Rodrigo ( Concierto como un divertimento, 1982 ) James MacMillan ( Cello Sonata No. 2, 2001 ), and Philip Glass ( Cello Concerto, 2001 ).

In 1954 Malcolm Arnold wrote a Concerto for Flute and Strings for his friend, who recorded it in 1979, together with the concerto for flute and orchestra ( 1972 ).

The Concerto gave Deep Purple its first highly publicised taste of mainstream fame and gave Lord the confidence to believe that his experiment and his compositional skill had a future, as well as giving Lord the opportunity to work with established classical figures, such as conductor Sir Malcolm Arnold ( knighted in 1993 ), who brought his technical skills to bear by helping Lord score the work and to protect him from the inevitable disdain of the older members of the orchestra.

The BBC, buoyed by the success of the Concerto, commissioned him to write another piece and the resulting " Gemini Suite " was performed by Deep Purple and the Light Music Society under Malcolm Arnold at the Royal Festival Hall in September 1970, and then in Munich with the Kammerorchester conducted by Eberhard Schoener in January 1972.

The instrument is rarely used in classical music ; Arnold Schoenberg employed it in his Variations for Orchestra and his unfinished opera Moses und Aron, and Aram Khachaturian wrote for it in his Piano Concerto ( though here the flexatone is now often omitted ).

The ten programmes titled The Papers used the Gershwin Piano Concerto in F as opening and closing music ; when it reverted to the original title, it was replaced again by the Arnold work, which is now being used for the revived programme on radio.
