The Tuscarora Nation of New York is federally recognized.

Those Tuscarora who allied with the British in the American Revolution resettled with other Iroquois tribes in present-day Ontario, where they are part of the Six Nations of the Grand River First Nation.

The North Carolina remnants have formed bands in which they call themselves Tuscarora ; as of 2010, several bands in Robeson County have united on an interim basis as the Tuscarora Nation One Fire Council.

The Tuscarora Nation of New York, says that the great majority of the tribe moved north to New York.

In 2006 the Skaroreh Katenuaka Nation, " AKA: Tuscarora Nation of Indians of North Carolina ", filed a federal lawsuit for recognition.

Skaroreh Katenuaka Nation, the Hatteras Tuscarora and the Tuscarora Nation of the Carolinas are all based in Robeson County, North Carolina.

In May 2010 leaders and individuals from the various Tuscarora factions in the Robeson County area came together to form the Tuscarora Nation One Fire Council ( TNOFC ).

The Tuscarora were admitted by the Iroquois as the Sixth Nation of their political confederacy.

In the early 18th century, the Iroquoian Tuscarora migrated to New York away from warfare in North and South Carolina ; in 1722 they were accepted by the Iroquois as the Sixth Nation of the Haudenosaunee.

The Tuscarora are a federally recognized tribe and the Sixth Nation of the Haudenosaunee or Iroquois Confederacy active before the American Revolutionary War.

The Tuscarora were given land from the Seneca tribe ( territory which they had taken from the Neutral Nation ) in 1797 ).

As of 2010, the North Carolina bands united in the interim Tuscarora Nation One Fire Council in Robeson County ; they are organizing their government prior to seeking state and federal recognition as a separate sovereign tribe, not enrollment in the Tuscarora Nation of New York.

Its attractions include Quaker Lake, the Mount Tuscarora Fire Tower, hiking trails, Science lake, Bear Caves, Thunder Rocks, the Quaker Amphitheater, and of course several campsites.

Being centrally located, they were considered the " Keepers of the Fire " ( Kayečisnakwe ’ nì · yu ’ in Tuscarora ) in the figurative longhouse.

Because of the historic determination in the 19th century by the Tuscarora Tribal Council that remnants of the people in North Carolina were no longer part of the tribe, the federally recognized Tuscarora Nation of New York contests the efforts by people in Robeson County to claim or be recognized under Tuscarora tribal identity.

He was not one of the fifty League sachems of the Iroquois Grand Council, made up of representatives of the five tribes ( six, when the Tuscarora were admitted in 1722 ).

It was signed at Canandaigua, New York on November 11, 1794, by fifty sachems and war chiefs representing the Grand Council of the Six Nations of the Iroquois ( Haudenosaunee ) Confederacy ( including the Cayuga, Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Seneca and Tuscarora tribes ), and by Timothy Pickering, official agent of President George Washington.

After extended conflict with European settlers and other Native Americans at the beginning of the 18th century and defeat in the Tuscarora War, most of the tribe migrated North, beginning in 1722.

The creek empties into the Susquehanna River at Windsor ( exit 79 ), which NY 17 follows southeast to Damascus ( exit 80 ) before turning northeast along Tuscarora Creek.

This force attacked the Southern Tuscarora and other tribes in Craven County at Fort Narhantes on the banks of the Neuse River in 1712.

While in Southampton the Confederate steamer Nashville came in ; but upon her leaving, the Tuscarora was unable to follow until the expiration of twenty-four hours, when, giving up the chase, Commander Craven went to the Mediterranean, where he succeeded in watching the CSS Sumter so closely that her officers and crew finally deserted the ship at Gibraltar.

The Tuscarora was ordered home in 1863, and Commander Craven was detached and ordered to command the Tecumseh, then building at Secor's yard, Jersey City.

After siding with the Province of South Carolina in the Tuscarora War of 1711 – 1715, the Cherokee had turned on their British allies at the outbreak of the Yamasee War of 1715 – 1717, until switching sides, once again, midway through the war.
