In 1885, Thomas Edison bought property in Fort Myers, Florida, and built what was later called Seminole Lodge as a winter retreat.

Six years later during the Second Seminole War the army established Fort Harrison along Clear Water Harbor as a rest post for soldiers from nearby Fort Brooke.
