Contained in the traffic ( intercepted and decrypted as part of the Venona project ) was information that documents had been sent to Moscow from the British Embassy in Washington.

Venona and Moscow
There are a number of decrypted World War II Soviet messages between NKVD offices in the United States and Moscow, also known as the Venona cables.
Evidence of Kramer's membership in the Communist Party USA ( CPUSA ) and his contacts with known Soviet agents comes from several sources: the direct testimony of Whittaker Chambers, Elizabeth Bentley, Lee Pressman, and Nathaniel Weyl ; the Venona decrypts ; and the Moscow archives of the Soviet Foreign Intelligence Service ( SVR ).
In a 1942 Venona cable discussing infiltration of OSS, “ Maksim ” ( Rezident Vasily Zarubin, under cover as “ Vasily Zubilin ”) in New York wrote to “ Victor ” ( General Pavel Fitin, head of NKVD foreign intelligence ) in Moscow, “ KINI is being entrusted to our agentura ,” meaning that recruitment was being undertaken.
The Venona project transcript of 14 November 1944 reported to Moscow that Sarant had been successfully recruited.

Venona and 1945
Sometime in 1945, the existence of the Venona program was revealed to the Soviet Union by the NKVD agent and United States Army SIGINT analyst and cryptologist Bill Weisband.
The full Venona transcripts were published in 1996 and show a resume of one cable from Churchill related by Maclean, during 1944 and 1945.
The Venona decrypts from 1945 suggest that Kramer was an unwilling source.
