The town formerly had its own railway station on the " Varsity Line " ( Oxford / Cambridge ), with a spur to Aylesbury ( from Verney Junction ).

On 6 August 1860 the Aylesbury and Buckingham Railway ( A & B ), with the 3rd Duke ( then still Marquess of Chandos ) as chairman and Sir Harry Verney as deputy chairman, was incorporated by Act of Parliament with the object of connecting the Buckinghamshire Railway ( by now operated by the LNWR ) to Aylesbury.

Macaulay began writing her first novel, Abbots Verney ( published 1906 ), after leaving Somerville and while living with her parents at Ty Isaf, near Aberystwyth, in Wales.

London Transport reduced the former A & B route between Quainton Road and Verney Junction to a single track in 1939 – 40.

Not long after the Metropolitan reached its northern outpost, Verney Junction was elevated to main line status with the opening of the MS & LR's London Extension ( later to be known as the Great Central Railway ).

A new Pullman service was introduced in 1910 as part of a drive to attract first-class paying passengers from the Great Central ; two Pullman coaches named " Mayflower " and " Galatea " were used on alternate weeks between Verney Junction, Chesham and London.

The Metropolitan was vested in the London Passenger Transport Board ( LPTB ) on 1 July 1933 and freight and passenger workings to Verney Junction continued in trains repainted with the London Transport lettering.

Although the two World Wars brought an increase in freight traffic from Verney Junction to London, with considerable volumes of freight passing through the station's transfer sidings, the post-war period saw a decline in the station's fortunes.

Quainton was once linked to London by train to Marylebone and Baker Street ; in the opposite direction travel was available to Rugby, Verney Junction and elsewhere.

On 23 September 1868, the small Aylesbury and Buckingham Railway ( A & BR ) opened, linking the Great Western Railway's station at Aylesbury to the London and North Western Railway's Oxford to Bletchley line at Verney Junction.

The history of the King's Head starts in 1455, with the first documentary reference appearing in a conveyance between William Wandeford, a London wool merchant, and Ralph Verney, a former master of the London Mercer's Company, dated 18 December 1455.

Buckingham had a railway station on the Banbury to Verney Junction Branch Line and ran from 1850 to 1964.

On 15 June 1839 entrepreneur and former Member of Parliament for Buckingham Sir Harry Verney, 2nd Baronet, opened the Aylesbury Railway.

Meanwhile, to the north of Aylesbury the Buckinghamshire Railway was being built by Sir Harry Verney.

With no nearby town after which to name the new station, it was named Verney Junction railway station after Sir Harry who owned the land on which it was built.

In 1873 Watkin entered negotiations to take control of the Aylesbury and Buckingham Railway and the section of the former Buckinghamshire Railway running north from Verney Junction to Buckingham.

Sir Harry Verney died on 12 February 1894, and on 31 March 1894 the MR took over the operation of services on the A & B from the GWR.

In 2009, during a scene of the movie X-Men Origins: Wolverine, " Springfield, Ohio " is listed in the scene caption as the location of a carnival where Victor Creed / Sabretooth finds Chris Bradley / Bolt working as a game booth attendant.
