In 1896, delegates from the stronger and wealthier VFA clubs — Carlton, Collingwood, Essendon, Fitzroy, Geelong, Melbourne, St Kilda and South Melbourne — met to form a breakaway competition and in 1897, the Victorian Football League ( VFL ), was born as an eight-team competition.

Between 1977 and 1987, the Australian Football Council ( AFC ) in conjunction with the VFL ran a night series, which invited clubs and representative sides from around the country to participate in the " National Football League " for the Wills Cup, however Victorian sides still dominated.

At the end of the 1896 season Essendon along with seven other clubs formed the Victorian Football League.

This move away from Essendon, at a time when fans would walk to their local ground, did not go over well with many Essendon people ; and, as a consequence, a new team and club was formed in 1900, unconnected with the first ( although it played in the same colours ), that was based at the Essendon Cricket Ground, and playing in the Victorian Football Association.

The club participated in the first football competition in Australia, winning the second season in 1863, was a foundation Victorian Football Association ( VFA ) and the Victorian Football League ( VFL ) in 1897.

The Geelong Football Club was among the most powerful in the VFA ( Victorian Football Association ), winning seven VFA premierships up to the birth of the VFL ( Victorian Football League ) in 1897.

The projected cost of $ 100 million was outside what the Melbourne Cricket Club could afford so the Victorian Football League took the opportunity to part fund the project in return for a 30-year deal to share the ground.

Led by Geelong and Essendon, the largest clubs of the VFA formed their own break away league, the Victorian Football League ( VFL ), in 1896.

Founded in 1873, the Club won nine premierships in the Victorian Football Association ( VFA ) between 1898 and 1924, and one premiership in 1954 since joining the then-Victorian Football League ( VFL ), the predecessor to the AFL, in 1925.

Alan Moore did likewise in his The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen comic book ( and its sequels ) in which various Victorian era literary characters meet and join up with the eponymous League ( though they are not descended from a single family ).

Amongst those who followed these ideas were the English poets and painters that constituted the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, who, from about 1850, opposed the dominant trend of industrial Victorian England, because of their " opposition to technical skill without inspiration " They were influenced by the writings of the art critic John Ruskin ( 1819 – 1900 ), who had strong feelings about the role of art in helping to improve the lives of the urban working classes, in the rapidly expanding industrial cities of Britain.

His grandfather, Simon Fraser, emigrated from Nova Scotia in 1853, becoming a successful pastoralist and speculator, as well as a member of the Victorian Parliament, the Federation Conventions of 1897 – 98 and the Australian Senate.
