In October, 2008, Hitchcock briefly rejoined Queen's University as an unpaid fellow in the university's School of Policy Studies, Centre for the Study of Democracy, which is headed by Thomas Axworthy, before retiring to a farm in upstate New York, at Vischer Ferry, north of Albany.

Peter Vischer the Elder ( c. 1455 – January 7, 1529 ) was a German sculptor, the son of Hermann Vischer, and the most famous member of the noted Vischer Family of Nuremberg.

Frederick died unmarried at Lochau, a hunting castle near Annaburg ( 30 km southeast of Wittenberg ), in 1525 and was buried in the Schlosskirche at Wittenberg with a grave by Peter Vischer the Younger.

The art theorist Robert Vischer argued that when we look at a painting, we " feel ourselves into it " by imagining our body in the posture of a nonhuman or inanimate object in the painting.

Inside the church are the tombs of Luther and Philipp Melanchthon, and of the electors Frederick the Wise ( by Peter Vischer the Younger, 1527 ) and John the Constant ( by Hans Vischer ), and portraits of the reformers by Lucas Cranach the Younger.

Born at Ludwigsburg as the son of a clergyman, Vischer was educated at Tübinger Stift, and began life in his father's profession.

Vischer threw himself heartily into the great German political movement of 1848-49, and shared the disappointment of patriotic democrats at its failure.

Vischer was not an original thinker, and his monumental Aesthetik, in spite of industry and learning, has not the higher qualities of success.

In later life Vischer moved considerably away from Hegelianism, and adopted the conceptions of sensuous completeness and cosmic harmony as criteria of beauty ; but he never found time to rewrite his great book.
