Waiau and line
Further sections of the line through Hawarden, Medbury, Balmoral, Pahau, Culverden, Achray, Rotherham and Waiau were constructed in subsequent years.
The line was officially opened to Medbury in 1884 and to Culverden in 1886 but the final section to Waiau was not completed until 1919.
The Culverden line now ran all the way as Waiau and some work took place on a line to link Waiau with Kaikoura, but after a few kilometres of formation was made, work came to a halt.

The Waiau River ( Southland ) is both a natural inlet and outlet for the lake, flowing into the northeast of the lake from Lake Te Anau, to the north and flowing out from Manapouri's south-eastern end.

Following the commemoration of the centenary of this line, various groups including the New Zealand Railway and Locomotive Society ( Canterbury Branch ) ( now the Canterbury Railway Society ) became interested in developing the historical site.
At that time the Canterbury Branch of the NZRLS applied to the New Zealand Railways Department to lease part of the old Southbridge Branch at Prebbleton.
The Museum of Science and Industry and the Canterbury Branch decided that the Ferrymead site was ideal.
The Canterbury Branch started construction of the Ferrymead Railway with infrastructure and facilities including the workshop, engine shed, stations, signalling systems and other facilities.
Also in that year, the NZRLS Canterbury Branch was reconstituted as the Canterbury Railway Society.
