Bennington is drained by the Walloomsac River and its tributaries.

The Walloomsac River ( or ) from the Native American name, Wal-loom-sac is a tributary of the Hoosic River in the northeastern United States.

From here the river flows westward as the Walloomsac River and joins the Hoosic River below Hoosick Falls, New York.

Traveling upstream from the confluence with the Hoosic River, the following tributaries feed the Walloomsac:

This divergence gave the name Walloomsac to a portion of the river flowing through town on the present course of South Stream.

The Battle of Bennington was a battle of the American Revolutionary War that took place on August 16, 1777, in Walloomsac, New York, about from its namesake Bennington, Vermont.

The Battle of Bennington of the American Revolution was fought NorthEast of Hoosick, on a farm owned by John Green, in the community of Walloomsac.

Many of the battles are regularly reenacted, and the Battle of Bennington ( although it was actually fought in present-day Walloomsac, New York ) is marked in the state of Vermont by Bennington Battle Day.

It rises in southwestern Vermont, in the Green Mountains east of the town of Bennington in Woodford Hollow at the confluence of Bolles Brook and City Stream where it is labeled Walloomsac Brook on maps but is locally known as " The Roaring Branch ".

Dedication ceremonies were delayed until 1891, when President Benjamin Harrison attended the ceremonies and held a reception at the nearby Walloomsac Inn.
