The region's main city and provincial capital is Poznań, near the centre of the region, on the Warta, with a population of over 560, 000.

Poznań (; ; Poyzn ) is a city on the Warta river in west-central Poland, with a population of 551, 627 in the end of 2010.

For centuries before the Christianization of Poland, Poznań ( consisting of a fortified stronghold between the Warta and Cybina rivers, on what is now Ostrów Tumski ) was an important cultural and political centre of the Polan tribe.

The smaller Cybina river flows through eastern Poznań to meet the east branch of the Warta ( that branch is also called Cybina – its northern section was originally a continuation of that river, while its southern section has been artificially widened to form a main stream of the Warta ).

Other tributaries of the Warta within Poznań are the Junikowo Stream ( Strumień Junikowski ), which flows through southern Poznań from the west, meeting the Warta just outside the city boundary in Luboń ; the Bogdanka and Wierzbak, formerly two separate tributaries flowing from the north-west and along the north side of the city centre, now with their lower sections diverted underground ; the Główna, flowing through the neighbourhood of the same name in north-east Poznań ; and the Rose Stream ( Strumień Różany ) flowing east from Morasko in the north of the city.

The course of the Warta in central Poznań was formerly quite different than today: the main stream ran between Grobla and Chwaliszewo, which were originally both islands.

Opposite it between the two branches of the Warta is Ostrów Tumski, containing Poznań Cathedral and other ecclesiatical buildings, as well as housing and industrial facilities.

The name was initially derived from the capital city, Posen ( Poznań ), and later from the main river, Warthe ( Warta ).

In 1253 Przemysł I chosen as his capital the city of Poznań, situated on the left bank of the Warta River.

Luboń () is a town situated on the Warta River, in the Poznań metro area, in the Greater Poland Voivodeship ( since 1999 ).

During the reign of King Boleslaus the Brave, there was a fortified settlement here, which protected the ford across the Warta on an important trade route from Silesia to Poznań.

It is located close to the Warta River to the northwest of Poznań, and has a population of approximately 11, 000.

Poznań began as a stronghold built in the 8th or 9th century AD between branches of the Warta and Cybina rivers, on what is now called Ostrów Tumski (" Cathedral Island ").

With the outbreak of the World War II Poznań was annexed by Germany, and was organized into the province called initially Reichsgau Posen, and later Reichsgau Wartheland ( Warthe being the German name for the Warta river ).

The branch west of Grobla ( the Zgniła Warta – " rotten Warta ") was filled in late in the 19th century, and the former main stream west of Chwaliszewo was diverted and filled in during the 1960s.

Beginning in the 1230s, Low-German – speaking colonists from the Holy Roman Empire began settling north and south of the Warta and Noteć Rivers upon the initiative of Pomeranian and Polish lords ; see Ostsiedlung.

In 1911 – 1913 the St. Roch road bridge was built across the Warta close to Berdychowo ( a bridge had previously stood there until 1771 ).

Aniela Tułodziecka ( 2 October 1853 – 11 October 1932 ) was a Polish educational activist of the Warta Society ( Towarzystwo Przyjaciół Wzajemnego Pouczania się i Opieki nad Dziećmi Warta ).

Located by the Warta River, it has been situated in the Greater Poland Voivodeship ( since 1999 ), previously in Poznań Voivodeship ( 1975 – 1998 ).

The waterways from the German-Polish border ( Oder River, through the Warta, Brda and Noteć rivers, Bydgoszcz Canal, Vistula River, Narew River, Bug River ) once used to link the Belarus and Ukrainian inland waterways via Mukhavets River, Dnieper – Bug Canal, Pripyat River and Dnieper River ), thus connecting north-western Europe with the Black Sea.

The Greater Polish Warta river basin was the original Poland — it is said that the Polans (), a West Slavic tribe, inhabited the Warta river basin from the 8th century.

Until the mid-13th century, the land where the river Kłodawka meets the Warta was the location of a defensive fort established by the Polish Piast dynasty.

For instance, the Polish castellany of Zantoch, an important base and crossing point over the Warta near its junction with the Noteć, was sought by Pomerania.

The Polish forces were organized into five groups, " East " under major Antoni Olechnowicz " Pohorecki ", " North "-major " Węgielny ", " Eastern South "-major " Jarema ", " South "-major Stanisław Sędziak " Warta ", and " West "-rittmeister ( rotmistrz ) Zygmunt Szendzielarz " Łupaszka ".

In November 1918 he volunteered for the newly created Polish Army, and commanded units disarming German soldiers in Warta.

The name means the Guard in Polish and also a name of river Warta on which Poznań is located.

The Prosna is a river in central Poland, a tributary of the Warta river ( near Pyzdry ), with a length of 217 kilometres ( 28th longest ) and the basin area of 4, 925 km < sup > 2 </ sup > ( all in Poland ).

It was also planned to divert the main stream of the Warta to flow east of Chwaliszewo ( in what was then a flood relief channel ), but this plan would not be realized until 1968 ( further major floods would occur in 1924 and 1940 ).

A major infrastructural change in the city centre, completed in the late 1960s, was the rerouting of the river Warta so that its main stream flowed in the former relief channel east of Chwaliszewo ( as had been planned following the floods of 1889 ); a right branch was also created linking with the Cybina across the former Berdychowo dam ( Tama Berdychowska ), thus making Ostrów Tumski a true island between the two branches.

Stare Miasto borders the districts of Nowe Miasto (" New Town ") to the east ( across the Warta river ), Wilda to the south, and Jeżyce and Grunwald to the west.

Ostrów Tumski, an island between the two branches of the Warta ( of which the right one is also called Cybina ), is also part of Nowe Miasto ; it contains Poznań's cathedral as well as other ecclesiastical buildings, and industrial sites to the north of these.

From Rusałka the Bogdanka continues ( partly underground ) to Sołacz Park ( Park Sołacki ), through Urbanowo, and then onwards underground to join the Warta.
