From Wasdale Head village Pillar appears to stand at the head of Mosedale, but the valley curves out of sight, actually having its source on the slopes of Scoat Fell.

Many walkers based in Wasdale climb Pillar as part of the Mosedale Horseshoe, a circuit of the skyline one of Wasdale's side valleys, which also includes Scoat Fell, Red Pike and Yewbarrow ; Kirk Fell may also optionally be included.

The head of the valley is dominated by the Great Gable and Scafell Pike, the highest peak in England, which, along with Scafell, Kirk Fell and Yewbarrow, surround the small community of Wasdale Head.

It is located at the " head " of the valley of Wasdale, and is surrounded by some of England's highest mountains: Scafell Pike, Sca Fell, Great Gable, Kirk Fell and Pillar.

Usual ascents are by one of the aforementioned passes ; alternatively one may climb Kirk Fell as part of the Mosedale Horseshoe, a walk on the fells surrounding Mosedale, a side-valley of Wasdale.

Kirk Fell sits squarely at the head of Wasdale, rising between the main headstreams of Mosedale and Lingmell Becks.

Seatallan's south western ridge falls gently at first across the broad green expanse of Nether Wasdale Common, finally narrowing to a point at Cat Bields ( 500 m or 1, 640 ft ), a mile from the summit.

A more taxing, but scenically far superior, approach begins at Seathwaite Farm at the end of Borrowdale, proceeding via Styhead Tarn, then taking the Corridor Route ( formerly known as the Guides Route ), a delightful walk along the western flank of the Scafell massif with intimate views of the fell, before joining the route from Wasdale near the summit.

The simplest route involves taking the Black Sail Pass, the main foot pass between Wasdale and Ennerdale, to its highest point ( around 545 metres ), then ascending the mountain's relatively gentle east ridge.

Great Gable is a mountain lying at the very heart of the English Lake District, appearing as a pyramid from Wasdale ( hence its name ), but as a dome from most other directions.

Great End may be ascended from Sty Head Tarn via The Band ( not to be confused with the more famous Band on Bowfell ), from Wasdale Head along Lingmell Gill and Spouthead Gill, from Borrowdale via Grains Gill, from Great Langdale via Rossett Gill and Esk Hause, or from Eskdale.

In 2009 a Fell Race, known as The Whaley Waltz, was added to the Rose Queen programme and annually attracts over 180 runners.

The Malham Show Fell Race runs over the nearby Cawden as part of the course.

The Holmfirth Harriers Athletics Club organise an annual " Holme Moss Fell Race " on and around Holme Moss in the summer.

Every November a Category A Fell Race takes place on the mountain starting and finishing at St Faith's Church at Llanfoist.

There is a Fairfield Horseshoe Fell Race, which takes place annually in May, first organised by the Lake District Mountain Trial Association in 1966.

It rises on the eastern slope of Cross Fell in the North Pennines, and flows eastwards for 85 miles ( 137 km ) to reach the North Sea between Hartlepool and Redcar near Middlesbrough.

Two miles to the north west is Great Mell Fell, often thought of as its ' twin '.

The rather scattered incidence of related names, however, probably makes it more likely that the hill-ridge itself is in question, for all that at 200 rising to it is not all that prominent compared to the Muntloch Fell and Inshanks Fell a mile or two to the west, or even the Mull of Galloway itself three miles ( 5 km ) to the south.

It is 788 m ( 2, 585 ft ) high and lies slightly off the main watershed of the Pennines, about ten miles south of Cross Fell.

At a height of 2, 782 feet, Great Dun Fell is the second-highest hill in England's Pennines, lying two miles south along the watershed from Cross Fell, its higher neighbour.

Kirk Fell east top has sufficient prominence ( 34 m, 112 ft ) to qualify as a Hewitt in its own right.

This is the route of the former Rimutaka railway and Rimutaka Incline over a distance of some 20 km, including 5 km of the 1 in 15 incline worked by the Fell centre-rail system.

Harter Fell summit is 1 mile or 1. 5 km southwest and 1, 800 ft or 550 m above the carpark at the head of the reservoir.

Leavitt, Drexel and Drexel's son-in-law John F. Fell formed the Suburban Land Company and purchased 1, 000 acres of land from the estate of Revolutionary War General William J. Gould.

Holder was a partner in many of Fell's projects ... In the summer of 1869 Fell traveled to northwestern Iowa and selected a tract of about forty sections, more than 25, 000 acres ( 100 km2 ) of land.

Fell frequently visited the site and in May 0f 1873 personally supervised the planting of some 100, 000 saplings and tree cuttings.

The Ordnance Survey Explorer 1: 25, 000 map shows it as Holme Fell, but their Landranger 1: 50, 000 map has it as Holm Fell, albeit with Holme Ground to the north-west.
