In the meantime, European manufacturers, gone from the Indianapolis 500 for nearly two decades, made a brief return just before World War II, with the competitive Maserati 8CM allowing Wilbur Shaw to become the first driver to win consecutively at Indianapolis in 1939-1940.

Warren Wilbur Shaw ( October 31, 1902-October 30, 1954 ) was a noted American racing driver and president of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway from 1945 until his death.

Born in Shelbyville, Indiana, Wilbur Shaw won the Indianapolis 500 race three times, in 1937, 1939 and 1940.

The Indianapolis " 500 " of the late Forties and early Fifties was a very special event through the work of Hulman and Shaw, although Hulman was always sure to point out that it was Wilbur putting it all together.

Although the previous year's race had been won by a Maserati driven by American Wilbur Shaw, neither Dreyfus nor his team partner René Le Bègue was familiar with the mechanical requirements and the very different rules of racing at Indianapolis ; this problem was exacerbated by both drivers not knowing English, and by the American racing community's reluctance to see a European win the " Great American Race.

Wilbur Shaw and the other drivers convinced the track promoters to run the race the following day and the term " Rain Date " was born.
