Early X-Men issues introduced the team's archenemy Magneto and his Brotherhood of Evil Mutants featuring Mastermind, Quicksilver, Scarlet Witch, and Toad.

With the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, he attempted to assassinate Senator Robert Kelly, and first battled the X-Men.

The character first appears with his twin sister, the Scarlet Witch, as a part of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants in the title X-Men.

In the storyline, the psyche of the adult ' Kate Pryde ' is sent back in time to the body of her younger self ( Kitty ), and she convinces the X-Men to help her thwart the assassination of a senator by the shapeshifter Mystique and her new Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, including new characters Avalanche, Pyro, and Destiny as well as the Blob.

Rogue was introduced as a member of Mystique's Brotherhood of Evil Mutants but later joined the X-Men.

Also in " Dark Horizons Part 2 ", Nightcrawler, Colossus, and Shadowcat are grouped together when the X-Men and the Acolytes are separated, a reference to the Europe-based superhero team Excalibur which included all three mutants in its roster.

At the mansion, the Danger Room ( the X-Men ’ s simulated reality training chamber ) gains sentience, christens itself " Danger ", assumes a humanoid form, and attacks the X-Men before leaving to kill Xavier.

Xavier, now depowered but able to walk in the wake of " House of M ", reveals that he had gathered and trained another team of X-Men ( this one composed of students of Dr. Moira MacTaggert ) sometime between the original team and the new X-Men team introduced in Giant Size X-Men # 1.

Xavier later recruits her as a teenager to be part of his X-Men team as " Marvel Girl ", the team's sole female member.

* In " What if ... starring Juggernaut: The Kingdom of Cain ", Juggernaut has killed the X-Men and as a result there is no one to oppose the sentinels, so the world is ravaged by them.

Notable story arcs of this decade include the 2010 storyline " Second Coming ", which is based on plot threads from " Messiah Complex " and " House of M ", " Age of X ", and " Schism " ( 2011 ), as well as the 2012 event " Avengers vs. X-Men ".

During the Avengers vs. X-Men storyline, the event has the Phoenix Force returning to Earth, presumably to reclaim Hope Summers, the " Mutant Messiah ", which will lead to a confrontation between the Avengers and the X-Men on how to deal with its arrival, with the Avengers anticipating the destruction that the Phoenix could bring while Cyclops hopes to use the Phoenix Force to restart the mutant population.
