In the northwest there is a 15 kilometer border with the autonomous area of Xishuangbanna of the People's Republic of China.

In October 2010, plans were announced for a 530 km railway linking Vientiane to Xishuangbanna, in Yunnan province in China.

# The Tai Lue (), located in Xishuangbanna ( China ) and the eastern states

" (;, Tai Nüa: ;, ) is one of several ethnic groups living in the Xishuangbanna Dai Autonomous Prefecture and the Dehong Dai and Jingpo Autonomous Prefecture ( both in southern Yunnan, China ), but by extension can apply to groups in Laos, Vietnam, Thailand, and Burma when Dai is used to mean specifically Tai Lue, Chinese Shan or even Tai in general.

They live in Xishuangbanna in Yunnan province, China.

In China, Asian elephants survive only in the prefectures of Xishuangbanna, Simao, and Lincang of southern Yunnan.

King Mangrai was born on October 2, 1238 in Ngoen Yang, ( present day Chiang Saen ), in Thailand on the Mekong River, as the son of the local ruler Lao Meng and his wife Ua Ming Chommueang, a princess from the Tai Lue city of Chiang Rung, which is now called Jinghong, in Sipsongpanna ( Xishuangbanna ), Yunnan, China.

It is also used in pockets of Kachin State in Burma, in northern Thailand, and in Xishuangbanna Dai Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan Province, China.

Xinzhai Village () is a small settlement in Manla district, Mengla County, Xishuangbanna prefecture, Yunnan province, China, only 8km from the border with Laos.

In 1758, Alaungpaya dispatched an expedition to the northern Shan States ( present-day northern and eastern Kachin State, northern Shan State, Xishuangbanna, Yunnan ) which had been annexed by the Qing Dynasty of China in the mid-1730s.
