Around 1930 Cheng met the well-known master Yang Chengfu ( 1883 – 1936 ), with whom he began to study Yang-style t ' ai chi ch ' uan, until Yang died.

Cheng's changes to the Yang-style form have never been officially recognised by the Yang family and ( perhaps partly because of the continued popularity of Cheng's shortened form ) his style is still a source of controversy among some t ' ai chi ch ' uan practitioners.

Yang Chengfu or Yang Ch ' eng-fu ( 1883 – 1936 ) is historically considered the best known teacher of the soft style martial art of Yang-style t ' ai chi ch ' uan ( Yang-style Taijiquan ).

His sons have continued to teach their father's Taijiquan, including his first son, the late Yang Zhenming ( 1910 – 1985 ) ( a. k. a. Yang Shaozhong, Yang Shao-Chung, Yeung Shao-Chung ; 楊守中 ), who brought Yang-style t ' ai chi ch ' uan to Hong Kong, his second son Yang Zhenji ( born 1921, current head of the family ), his third son, Yang Zhenduo ( 楊振鐸 ; born 1926 ), living in Shanxi Province, who is widely considered the most prominent of the Yang family T ' ai chi ch ' uan instructors living today, and his fourth son, Yang Zhen Guo, born in 1928, and living in Hebei Province, Handan City.

The founder of the Yang-style was Yang Lu-ch ' an ( 楊露禪 ), aka Yang Fu-k ' ui ( 楊福魁, 1799 – 1872 ), who studied under Ch ' en Chang-hsing starting in 1820.

Yang became a teacher in his own right, and his subsequent expression of t ' ai chi ch ' uan became known as the Yang-style, and directly led to the development of other three major styles of t ' ai chi ch ' uan ( see below ).

Thus, Yang Chengfu is largely responsible for standardizing and popularizing the Yang-style t ' ai chi ch ' uan widely practised today.

Grandmaster Yang Zhen Duo is from the fourth generation of the Yang family and is officially the Fourth Lineage Holder of the Traditional Yang-style T ' ai chi ch ' uan.

In July 2009, at the First International Tai Chi Chuan Symposium, held at Vanderbilt University, in Nashville, TN, Grandmaster Yang Zhen Duo officially named his grandson Yang Jun as the Fifth Lineage Holder of the Traditional Yang-style T ' ai chi ch ' uan.
