Francis Younghusband wrote the foreword to the book.

Younghusband published a number of books with what we might call New Age themes, with titles like The Gleam: Being an account of the life of Nija Svabhava, pseud.

It is often referred to as the " Hero City " because during the British Younghusband Expedition of 1904, Tibetan forces battled the British for all of two months despite technological disparities in Younghusband's favor.

In 1889, the year he made Captain, Younghusband was dispatched with a small escort of Gurkha soldiers to investigate an uncharted region north of Ladakh, where raiders from Hunza had disrupted trade between Yarkand and India the previous year.

Important areas of wetland remain including the lakes and lagoons around the Murray Mouth, where the huge Murray River, by now reduced by draining off into the dry plains of Australia, finally meets the ocean between the Younghusband and the Sir Richard Peninsulas via a series of shallow lagoons including the Coorong, Lake Albert, Lake Alexandrina and Bool Lagoon.

For his services in mediating between the British and Tibetans during the Younghusband Expedition to Lhasa, Tibet, he was knighted by the British in 1904.

Lieutenant Colonel Sir Francis Edward Younghusband, KCSI, KCIE ( 31 May 1863 – 31 July 1942, Dorset ) was a British Army officer, explorer, and spiritual writer.

In July 1942 Younghusband suffered a stroke after addressing a meeting of the World Congress of Faiths in Birmingham.

Stein, as well as other contemporary explorers like Sven Hedin, Sir Francis Younghusband and Nikolai Przhevalsky, were active players in the British-Russian struggle for influence in Central Asia, the so-called Great Game.

According to Francis Younghusband, who explored the region in the late 1880s, there was only an abandoned fort and not one inhabited house at Shahidulla when he was there-it was just a convenient staging post and a convenient headquarters for the nomadic Kirghiz.

The British suspected Russian involvement " with the Rulers of the petty States on the northern boundary of Kashmir ;" In 1888 the Russian Captain Bronislav Grombchevsky visited Hunza, and the following year the British Captain Francis Younghusband visited Hunza to express British displeasure at Kanjuti raids in the Raskam.

Before they lost southern parts of the province to Yakub Beg in 1863, their practical authority, as Ney Elias and Younghusband consistently maintained, had never extended south of their outposts at Sanju and Kilian along the northern foothills of the Kun Lun range.

The park area includes the Coorong itself, and Younghusband Peninsula which separates the Coorong from Encounter Bay in the Southern Ocean.

In 1891, Russia sent a military force to the Wakhan and provoked a diplomatic incident by ordering the British Captain Francis Younghusband to leave Bozai Gumbaz in the Little Pamir.

At the end of 1903, Curzon sent a British expedition to Tibet under Francis Younghusband, ostensibly to forestall a Russian advance.

Younghusband held positions including British commissioner to Tibet and President of the Royal Geographical Society.

Francis Younghusband was born in 1863 at Murree, British India ( now Pakistan ) to a British military family, being the second son of Major-General John W. Younghusband and his wife Clara Jane Shaw.

In 1886-1887, on leave from his regiment, Younghusband made on an expedition across Asia.

With a senior colleague, Henry E. M. James ( on leave from his Indian Civil Service position ) and a young British consular officer from Newchwang, Harry English Fulford, Younghusband explored Manchuria, visiting the frontier areas of Chinese settlement in the region and the Changbai Mountains.

Younghusband carried out numerous scientific observation ( in particular, showing that the Changbai Mountains's highest peak, Baekdu Mountain is only around 8, 000 feet tall, even though the British maps the travelers had showed snow-capped peaks 10, 000-12, 000 ft tall in the area ), while Fulford was providing the travelers with a language and cultural expertise.

In the month he spent traveling the region Guthrie wrote 26 songs, which have become an important part of the cultural history of the region.
