Records of the Three Kingdoms details the biographies of Guan Yu, Zhang Fei, Zhao Yun, Ma Chao and Huang Zhong in the same chapter.

The Ming Dynasty writer Li Yutang named Di Qing, Shi Yu, Zhang Zhong, Li Yi, and Liu Qing as the " Five Tiger Generals " in his works Romance of Di Qing, The Five Tigers Conquer the West, and The Five Tigers Pacify the South.

He then promoted Huang Zhong to General of the Rear ( 後將軍 ), placing the latter on the same level as three other generals: Guan Yu, Zhang Fei and Ma Chao.

Pan Zhang sent his aide Shi Ji ( 史跡 ), who was slain by Huang Zhong within three bouts.

Brandishing the slain Guan Yu's Green Dragon Crescent Blade, Pan Zhang then rode forward to meet Huang Zhong.

The next day, Pan Zhang rode out to issue challenge for another duel, which Huang Zhong eagerly took up.

Fortunately, a friendly force led by Guan Xing and Zhang Bao came to the rescue and brought back Huang Zhong.

After Xiahou Yuan was killed at Battle of Mount Dingjun in 219 at the hands of Shu general, Huang Zhong, most of his troops were placed under the command of Zhang He upon advice from Guo Huai, while his private militia and guards were succeeded by his five sons.

In another, " Qing Xia Ji " ( 情俠記 Pinyin: Qīng xiá jì, Record of the Passionate Hero ), the protagonist, Zhang, a valiant soldier with two warrior wives, is seduced by his younger friend Zhong, a remarkable arrangement as it is stereotypically the older man who takes the initiative with a boy.

After all, many of Shu's greatest generals such as the likes of Guan Yu, Zhang Fei and Huang Zhong, all met untimely deaths and could not live to see the later prosperities of Shu.

Zhong Hui considered retreating, but Deng Ai led a smaller detachment through a treacherous mountain pass descending on Jiangyou ( 江油 ; in present-day Mianyang, Sichuan ), defeating Zhuge Liang's son Zhuge Zhan and heading directly for the Shu capital Chengdu.

During the ordeal, Zhong You ( 仲由 ) had managed to keep the duke and the three viscounts together at the court.

Zhong You was one of the disciples of Confucius and was arranged the position of govenor at the Ji family by Confucius.
