Zhu and Youyuan
His father, Zhu Youyuan ( 1476 – 1519 ), the Prince of Xing, was the fourth son of the Cheng-hua emperor ( 1465 – 1487 ) and the eldest son of three sons born to the emperor's concubine, Lady Shao.
Due to complications in the succession process, Shizong was not a direct descendant of previous emperors Wuzong or Xiaozong, as he was the only surviving son of Zhu Youyuan the late Prince Xian of Xing and the eldest younger brother of Xiaozong.

Zhu Di was entitled as the Prince of Yan, the area around Beijing.
But Zhu Di was not the oldest brother, forcing his father to name Zhu Biao, the Prince of Jin, as the crown prince.
He posthumously demoted his late elder brother Zhu Biao as Crown Prince Yiwen, demoted two younger brothers of Jianwen Emperor to commoners and kept them under house arrest at Fengyang, presumably till their deaths ; also under house arrest there was Zhu Wengui, the 2-year-old son of Jianwen Emperor, who would only be released as long as 55 years later.
According to some reports, Zhu is a 18th generation descendent of Zhu Bian ( 朱楩 ), titled Prince of Min ( 岷王 ), the 18th son of Hongwu Emperor, the founder of the Ming Dynasty.

The Yongle Emperor ( Traditional Chinese: 永樂帝 ; Simplified Chinese: 永乐帝 ; pinyin: Yǒnglèdì ; Wade-Giles: Yung-lo Emperor ; ) ( 2 May 1360 – 12 August 1424 ), born Zhu Di ( 朱棣 ), was the third emperor of the Ming Dynasty of China, reigning from 1402 to 1424.
The Yongle Emperor was born Zhu Di on 2 May 1360, the fourth son of the new leader of the central Red Turbans, Zhu Yuanzhang, who would later rise to become the Hongwu Emperor, the first emperor of the Ming Dynasty.
