The elder Jaggard has seemed an odd choice to many commentators, given his problematical relationship with the Shakespeare canon: Jaggard issued the suspect collection The Passionate Pilgrim in 1599 and 1612, and in 1619 printed the so-called False Folio, ten pirated or spurious Shakespearean plays, some with false dates and title pages.

A tradition, impossible to verify, holds that Henry V was the first play performed at the new Globe Theatre in the spring of 1599 — the Globe would have been the " wooden O " mentioned in the Prologue — but Shapiro argues that the Chamberlain's Men were still at The Curtain when the work was first performed, and that Shakespeare himself probably acted the Chorus.

The Latin words Et tu, Brute ?, however, were not devised by Shakespeare for this play, since they are attributed to Caesar in earlier Elizabethan works and had become conventional by 1599.
