The term " Geiger counter " is commonly used to mean a hand-held survey type meter, however the Geiger principle is in wide use in installed " area gamma " alarms for personnel protection, and in process measurement and interlock applications.
Once this improved sensor was available, Geiger counter instruments could be produced relatively cheaply because the large output pulse required little electronic processing to give a count rate reading, which was a distinct advantage in the thermionic valve era due to valve cost and power consumption.

Alpha particles are the same as a helium-4 nucleus ( two protons and two neutrons ) and travel at speeds in excess of 5 % of the speed of light, but they interact with matter very heavily, and thus at their usual velocities only penetrate a few centimeters of air, or a few millimeters of low density material ( such as the thin mica material which is specially placed in some Geiger counter tubes to allow alpha particles in ).

Geiger and detector
In wavelength dispersive analysis, the single-wavelength radiation produced by the monochromator is passed into a photomultiplier, a detector similar to a Geiger counter, which counts individual photons as they pass through.
The original observations of the Van Allen radiation belt used a Geiger counter, a crude detector unable to tell particle charge or energy.
However, the Geiger counter could not distinguish X-rays produced from specific elements and in 1950, Castaing added a quartz crystal between the sample and the detector to permit wavelength discrimination.
) While a Geiger counter or Gamma Probe determine only the count rate ( i. e. the number of gamma rays interacting in the detector in one second ), a gamma-ray spectrometer also determines the energies of the gamma-rays photons emitted by the source.

Geiger and combined
A much more modern and sophisticated device than earlier CD meters and equipped with a probe containing two Geiger-Mueller tubes of differing sensitivities, the CD V-718 can cover a much wider range of radiation levels than the earlier Geiger counters and ion-chamber survey meters combined ( from. 001mR / hr to 10, 000 R / hr ).

The original operating principle was discovered in 1908 and Geiger counters remain popular instruments for use in radiation dosimetry, health physics, experimental physics, the nuclear industry, geological exploration and other fields, due to their robust sensing element and their relatively low cost.
