Lattelecom ( previously Lattelekom ) is a Latvian internet service provider and telecommunications company.

The Latvian fixed telecommunications market is now open to competition but Lattelecom still has an overwhelming share of the market, and the company is also one of leading internet service providers in Latvia and is one of the owners of Latvijas Mobilais Telefons, Latvia's largest cell phone operator.

An investment proposal came from the Russian GAZ company but it was rejected by the Latvian government which considered Russian capital a threat to Latvian independence.

51 % of Lattelecom 51 % shares are owned by the Latvian government, but the remaining 49 %-by the Scandinavian company TeliaSonera AB.

Cable and Wireless later sold its shares to TeliaSonera, as a result of which 51 % of the company ’ s shares are presently owned by the Latvian government, but 49 %-by TeliaSonera.

The remaining 51 % of the company still belongs to Latvian government.

In 1979, the Mobile went to the USSR to record a performance of the Katchaturian ballet Gayane performed by the Latvian company Ballet Riga.

The company was also criticised for faking a meteorite landing in Latvia in October 2009, as a result of which the Latvian government cancelled its contract with Tele2.

The disadvantage of the new brand is however that " Lattelecom " cannot be pronounced correctly in Latvian if pronounced according to Latvian language rules.

This led to considerable confusion with Lattelecom employees and customers, as the " telecom " part of the brand was not recognizable in Latvian as being related to telecommunication services.

Comparatively, some consider the diacritics on the Latvian consonants " ģ ", " ķ ", " ļ ", " ņ ", and formerly " ŗ " to be cedillas.

Latgale ( formerly Lettgallia ; Latgalian: Latgola ) is one of the four historical and cultural regions of Latvia recognised in the Constitution of the Latvian Republic.

Anatolijs Gorbunovs, also formerly known as Anatoly Valeryanovich Gorbunov () ( b. February 10, 1942 in Pilda parish, Ludza municipality, Latvia ), is a Latvian politician who served as the parliamentary speaker during the last years of Soviet regime in Latvia and during the first years after the country regained its independence.

The Social Democratic Party (, SDP ; formerly Social Democratic Union,, SDS ) was a political party in Latvia formed by a splinter group from the Latvian Social Democratic Labour Party ( LSDSP ) after the leader of the Social Democrats ' faction in the Saeima, Egils Baldzēns, lost to Juris Bojārs in the elections for party chairman on 27 October 2001.

On March 25, 1988 the group called for the Latvian people to gather by the Freedom Monument in Riga to commemorate the victims of Soviet terror.
