Throughout the decades Renault developed a collaborative partnership with Nash Motors Rambler and its successor American Motors Corporation ( AMC ).

Renault partnered with AMC on other projects, such as development of a rotary concept engine in the late 60s.

In North America, Renault formed a partnership with American Motors, lending AMC operating capital and buying a small percentage of the company in late 1979.

To protect its investment, Renault bailed AMC out with a big cash influx – at the price of a controlling interest in the company of 47. 5 %.

Renault quickly replaced some top AMC executives with their own people.

The Renault – AMC partnership also resulted in the marketing of Jeep vehicles in Europe.

Eventually, Renault sold AMC to Chrysler in 1987 after the assassination of Renault ’ s chairman, Georges Besse.

A completely new full-sized 4-door sedan, the Eagle Premier, was developed during the partnership between AMC and Renault.

In May 2012, images of a new Renault Alpine concept were leaked prior to its debut in Monaco.

The original Matra design for the Renault Espace was created when Matra was owned by Chrysler Corporation, so Chrysler may also be credited with originating the minivan concept in Europe as well.

They started a trend in Europe, where the 1952 GM Bedford CA, 1959 Renault Estafette, 1960 BMC Morris J4, and 1960 Commer FC also used the concept.

Taking its name from a Renault concept car shown in 1988, the Mégane further developed the new corporate styling theme introduced by Patrick Le Quément on the Laguna, most notably the " bird-beak " front grille-a styling cue borrowed from the Renault 16 of the 1960s.

Some features, such as the 3-point middle belt, had debuted on the Renault 19 safety concept vehicle ( and in fact this feature entered production on the Renault Laguna before the Megane ).

However, the 1950 Volkswagen Type 2, also known as the Kombi, and the 1956 Fiat 600 Multipla, popularised the versatile multi-seater concept some 30 years prior to the Espace, and the concept had been tried several times before that, an early example being the 1935 Stout Scarab, and there was the very similar in concept Plymouth Voyager which Lee Iacocca claims was proposed by himself in 1973 when he was working at Ford, although he never got the chance to build it until he went to Chrysler in 1984, the same year the Renault Espace was launched.

The Matra concept became the Renault Espace.

On June 22, 2012, Renault officially announced a restyling of the Espace ( Phase IV ), the second important after 2006, incorporating the " family feeling " design concept of Laurens van den Acker.

The Renault 12's design dates back to the genesis of the Renault 16 ; indeed, some initial R16 concept designs resemble the R12 more than the ultimate design of the R16.

The regular production Renault passenger models are unrelated to the concept car of the same name, the Laguna, a two-seat roadster shown by the automaker during the European 1990 auto show circuit.

The concept was also used in the 2010 Renault Wind.

The Mégane Scénic can be traced back to a concept car designed under the supervision of Anne Asensio, then designer at Renault.

The 2006 Renault Altica concept was described as a shooting brake, and in 2010, Mercedes presented its concept Shooting Brake.
