The canal is clearly shown on a map produced in 1790 by Thomas Pride, and on an Enclosure Map for Swallowfield, produced in 1817 and held at the Berkshire Record Office.

His interest in geology was kindled in early life, and in 1824 he had assisted Prof Chester Dewey ( 1784-1867 ) in preparing a geological map of Berkshire County, in which the first attempt was made to classify the rocks of the Taconic area.

It is usually helpful to make a sketch map in the field, showing the size and location of the features of interest and to take photographs at the site.

Other known maps of the ancient world include the Minoan " House of the Admiral " wall painting from c. 1600 BCE, showing a seaside community in an oblique perspective and an engraved map of the holy Babylonian city of Nippur, from the Kassite period ( 14th12th centuries BCE ).

A couple of examples might be a dot map showing corn production in Indiana or a shaded area map of Ohio counties, divided into numerical choropleth classes.

A topographic map is primarily concerned with the topographic description of a place, including ( especially in the 20th and 21st centuries ) the use of contour lines showing elevation.
