* 1906 – The Courrières mine disaster, Europe's worst ever, kills 1099 miners in Northern France.

The Courrières mine disaster, Europe's worst mining accident, involved the death of 1, 099 miners in Northern France on 10 March 1906.

Mining accidents continue worldwide, including accidents causing dozens of fatalities at a time, such as the 2007 Ulyanovskaya Mine disaster in Russia, the 2010 Upper Big Branch Mine disaster in the United States, and the 2009 Heilongjiang mine explosion in China.

And right before that, we had that coal mine disaster in West Virginia where we lost 29 miners.

The Summitville mine was the scene of a major environmental disaster in the 1990s when the liner of a cyanide-laced tailing pond began leaking heavily.

These two deaths with the addition of January's Sago Mine disaster and the Aracoma Alma Mine disaster caused West Virginia Governor Joe Manchin to close all of West Virginia's mines in a " mine safety stand-down.

This was the third most deadly mine disaster in U. S. history ( as of 2005 ).

This was the worst mine disaster to date in the coal fields of southern Illinois.

Hyden briefly came to national attention when the Hurricane Creek mine disaster occurred in late 1970, five miles from Hyden.

Among the lakes is Lake Peigneur, which was formerly a deep freshwater lake until a 1980 disaster involving oil drilling and a salt mine.

The first successful attack on the Hejaz railroad with a locomotive-destroying " Garland mine " was led by Major H. Garland in February 1917, a month before Lawrence's first attack on the railroad in March 1917.

On February 4, 2010, at his war crimes trial in the Hague, Taylor testified that Robertson was his main political ally in the U. S., and that he had volunteered to make Liberia's case before U. S. administration officials in exchange for concessions to Robertson's Freedom Gold, Ltd., to which Taylor gave a contract to mine gold in southeast Liberia.

The mine closed on February 16, 1961.

On February 9, 1935, Glen Alden Coal Co. ( successor to the DL & W ) began to dismantle and demolish the Avondale breaker and to close the mine.

However, in July 1871, Bonnell sold the improvements and leased the coal rights to the Wilkes-Barre Coal & Iron Co., and in February 1876, Bonnell sold the property outright to the Lehigh & Wilkes-Barre Coal Co. Lance, who moved to Philadelphia and became a mat manufacturer, spent years in court, suing his old friend Bonnell in a futile attempt to recover the mine.

On February 13, 1894, the Scranton Republican reported a large cave-in at the Gaylord mine: " We are called upon to detail the awful scenes of another miner horror.

Fender continued to operate the mine, but on February 25, 1860, lost the property at sheriff's sale.

The miners who formed the union had already experienced a number of hard-fought battles with mine owners and governmental authorities: in the Coeur d ' Alene strike in February of 1892, after company guards shot five strikers to death, the miners disarmed the guards and marched more than a hundred strikebreakers out of town.

On 11 February 1904, the Russian minelayer started to mine the entrance to Port Arthur.

When the UN Security Council discussed Iraq on February 14, 2003, the French Foreign Minister Dominique de Villepin ended his speech with the words: " This message comes to you today from an old country, France, from a continent like mine, Europe, that has known wars, occupation and barbarity.
