John Berryman ( 1914 – 1972 ) and Robert Lowell ( 1917 – 1977 ) were the leading lights in what was to become known as the Confessional movement, which was to have a strong influence on later poets like Sylvia Plath ( 1932 – 1963 ) and Anne Sexton ( 1928 – 1974 ).

Many self-identified Confessional Lutherans are adherents of the High Church Lutheran movement.

Indeed, the church has aligned itself with the Confessional Lutheran movement.

Berryman's poetry, which often revolved around the sordid details of his personal problems ( in The Dream Songs but also in his other books as well ) is closely associated with the Confessional poetry movement.

Anglicans and Old Catholics see themselves as a communion within the Catholic Church and Lutherans see themselves as " a reform movement within the greater church catholic ".

Wright and Nicky Gumbel, some Lutherans, the Seventh-day Adventist Church, Advent Christian Church, the non denominational group Afterlife Christadelphians, the Church of God ( Seventh Day ), Church of God ( 7th day )-Salem Conference, the Church of God Abrahamic Faith, and various other Church of God organizations including most Related Denominations which adhered to the older teachings of Herbert W. Armstrong's Worldwide Church of God and the Bible Student movement.

Their movement went underground after the suppression of the Münster Rebellion, with members posing as Catholics or Lutherans as necessary.

Larry Christenson, a Lutheran theologian based in San Pedro, California, did much in the 1960s and 1970s to interpret the charismatic movement for Lutherans.

A watershed in the civil rights movement occurred in 1963 when Shuttlesworth requested that Martin Luther King, Jr., and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference ( SCLC ), which Shuttlesworth had co-founded, come to Birmingham, where King had once been a pastor, to help end segregation.

T. T. Martin, an evangelist and one of the most prominent figures in the anti-evolution movement in the 1920s, is buried in Gloster.
