The only software available at the launch ( except ROM firmware ) was an included magnetic tape with an early version of BASIC, several programming examples ( both for BASIC and FOCAL ), and several tests.

This update also allowed up to 8 MB for the RAM Disk, added some new features for programmers, and reported the ROM version and copyright information on the startup splash screen.

As the firmware only worked in this motherboard and no new firmware updates were ever issued, users commonly referred to this version of the Apple IIGS as the " ROM 3 ".

The ROM revision for a specific Apple IIc is determined by entering the Applesoft BASIC programming language and typing in the command PRINT PEEK ( 64447 ) which returns the value indicating the particular ROM version.

This was the final change to the Apple IIc until superseded by the Apple IIc Plus ( identified as ROM version ‘ 5 ’).
